Wilma Fay Snowbarger died peacefully on November 26, 2020 in Catoosa, Oklahoma. She was born April 8, 1934 in Oklahoma City to Tom and Esta Montgomery.
Wilma had five older brothers and one younger sister, Delma Ray. She and Delma were inseparable in their younger years and remained close friends their entire lives. Wilma was known for her love for Jesus, devotion to family, excellent piano playing, and accomplished teaching career.
Balancing social activities and academics wasnt a problem for Wilma as a young woman. She finished high school in three years and enrolled in college at age 16. In college she became Homecoming Queen in 1954 and in 1956 graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education from Bethany Nazarene College (SNU).
One college social activity that would change her life was the "hayrack ride" her sophomore year. This was her first date with a Kansas farm boy named Marion. They fell in love and were married in 1955 at Trinity Church of the Nazarene (OKC, OK), Wilmas home church.
After their marriage, Wilma remained in college her Senior year while Marion was stationed in Fort Bliss TX and Fort Hamilton NY. When she graduated, they happily ended that separation and learned a new lifestyle in the New York City area while Marion served in the Army and Wilma worked as a secretary. She and Marion made many new friends, saw new sights and enjoyed living near the beach. They fondly remember a road trip through New England. On September 30, 2020 she and Marion celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage.
They settled in Oklahoma City. Over her 20 year career, Wilma taught kindergarten and other elementary grades in the Oklahoma City and Putnam City schools. In addition to being an educator, Wilma was an excellent musician. This began at a young age when Wilma, her sister, and a friend formed a singing trio and even performed on the radio. She continued singing in college in a trio and the A Cappella Choir. Wilma later played the organ and piano at Norman Grace Church of the Nazarene for 18 years and was also a long-time member of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene where she served from 1976-79 as Early Childhood Director and began the MOPS ministry.
Wilma was a fun-loving mother to two sons, Larry and Tim, and instilled a pursuit of excellence in them. Wilma welcomed many young people into their home and served as a mentor and spiritual influence for them. She was a Christ-like model of hospitality, compassion and love for others. She loved Jesus with all her heart as shown in the many notes and highlights in her Bible.
She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers: Orris, Winfred, Lester, Oran and Billy. Wilma is survived by her husband, Marion Snowbarger of Tulsa; sister, Delma Tracy of Westminster, CA; two sons, Larry Snowbarger (wife Linda) of Tulsa and Tim Snowbarger of Laramie, WY; five grandchildren, Austin (wife Martha), Megan (husband David), Gage, Kenzie (husband Davis), and Cooper (wife Abby); two great-grandchildren, Hallie and Bennett; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
