Obituary

Wilma Gene Meacham Pickens Cathey, 80, passed away Friday, April 26, 2019, surrounded with love at Integris Hospice Center after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Wilma was born October 12, 1938, in Eldorado, OK, to Charlie and Louise Thomason. She was the youngest of three girls. She grew up with her double cousin, Harvey Thomason, and treated him like a brother. She loved to tease him and make him laugh. In OKC as a teenager, she became friends with Doc and Ethel Butler and kids. To this day they still call her Sis. She graduated from Central High School 1956. She was a Blackskirt and majorette. She loved attending class reunions. She met her first husband, Ronald B. Meacham when a bridge partner canceled, and she filled in. They married 7 months after that, on September 25, 1960. She borrowed a friends dress for her wedding and made her going-away dress. They adopted and raised two daughters. Kym was born in 1966 and Karla was born in 1969. Wilma lived a life full of love, laughter, adventure and faith. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was strong and determined; loving and tender. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper, quilted and sewed, played a great game of bridge, traveled, went on mission trips, sang in the church choir, graduated from Bible Study Fellowship and was active in her Sunday School classes and other groups for many years. She was the very definition of friend. Wilma had a keen sense of humor and the gift of hospitality. She always had room for more at the table. She opened her home to many out of town guests and, when she moved, she bought a bigger home so more could stay. She would say, "I might have something for us to eat." Then she would pull out more food than anyone could eat! She invited Harrell Pickens out to eat after his wife died. They married on February 12, 1999. Harrell was the grandfather to her grandchildren and partner for many of her travels. Harrell passed away in February 2015. After his death, she reconnected with a Central High classmate, Jarrell Cathey, class of 1955. They were married September 27, 2015. They were able to take several trips to see her grandkids and her sister, Margaret, in Arizona. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Ron Meacham, her second husband, Harrell Pickens, and her two sisters, Maurice Patteson and Margaret Martin with whom she was extremely close. She is survived by her husband, Jarrell Cathey; her daughters, Kym and David Thurman and Karla and Stephen Smith; her brother-in-law, Royce and Dee Meacham; and her 13 grandchildren, Baylee Thurman, Jay and Chloe Thurman, Maddy Thurman, Walker Thurman, Abbi Smith, Molly Thurman, Ally Smith, Ron Thurman, Kiley Thurman, Amelia Smith, Tyler Thurman, Olivia Thurman, and Naomi Thurman. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 1, 12-9pm, with family present from 4:30-6:30pm at Mercer-Adams Funeral Home.
