Obituary

William L. (Bill) Newman (93) passed away peacefully in his home on March 29, 2023 with several family members at his side. He was born November 24, 1929 to Rufus and Bessie (Jones) Newman in Cleveland, OK. He married Eleanor Williams on January 16, 1953 in Tampa, FL. Bill owned several pharmacies and drugstores for over 30 years. After retiring as a Doctor of Pharmacy, he continued working as needed as a relief pharmacist for several friends for many additional years. He was also a veteran of the United States Air Force and formed lifelong friendships with several of his service friends. Bill worked long hours in his pharmacies to provide for his family. He served his customers not only during business hours but would also hand deliver prescriptions day or night to customers with mobility problems or ones with sick children. During his time off, you could normally find him playing a round of golf at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, where he was a member for many years. He was a dedicated caregiver. In the mid 1960s, he converted his single-car garage into a small apartment to provide a place to live for his infirmed mother. He checked on her several times a day, kept her kitchen stocked with food, and provided medical assistance to her as needed for over 30 years. When his wife began requiring care for Alzheimers, a disease that lasted 12 years, he met her every need until her death in 2014. He rarely left her side during this time. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Bessie Newman, his wife of 59 years, Eleanor Newman, his brother, Jesse Everett Newman, and his sister, Dona Lou Newman White. He is survived by brothers, Robert Dale (Bob) Newman and Gerald Robbins (Jerry) Newman; daughter, Diane Adele Newman Terpening (husband Robert Terpening); son, William L (Larry) Newman, II (wife Stephanie); grandson, Matthew William Newman; granddaughter, Haley Anne Newman Homan (husband Justin Homan); granddaughter, Emily Marie Terpening; and two great grandsons, John Matthew Homan and Jason Michael Homan (infant twins). A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, April 14, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at Spring Creek Memorial Cemetery, 14300 N. County Line Road, Oklahoma City. Special thanks to four special people, neighbor Leslie Elfring (deceased), Merlynn Nelson, and Holly McCorkle who provided help with his care for several years, and more recently Ashleigh Dautermann.
