William L Munroe, Jr, 58, passed from this life on March 10, 2009 at home in Oklahoma City after a prolonged illness. He was born in Grand Island, NE, on January 26, 1951. He was preceded by his father William L Munroe, Sr, and is survived by his mother Ferne Munroe, brother Craig and his wife Linda Munroe and their daughter Wendy and husband Rick Russell, and his brother Jeffrey Munroe.
He graduated from Midwest City High School in 1970. He started out in business with his father. They owned the Getty Service Station at I-40 and Meridian next to the Hilton Inn Northwest for 12 years. They also owned the Mobil station at I-40 and MacArthur for 5 years. Texaco bought them out, and they opened JRs Auto Parts near 23rd and MacArthur, and closed 3 years later after discount parts stores took over the market. He worked for Moyers auto parts warehouse for several years before opening the A Better Herb Shop with his brother Jeff in October 1998. He loved working with people and had a great empathy for those in need. His own growing health problems finally made it to difficult to continue working, and they closed the store in 2006. He continued to help people spiritually, even when he was dealing with his own problems.
During high school, he was involved in Midwest City Chapter Order of DeMolay; he received the Representative DeMolay Award, the Degree of Chevalier, and the Past Master Councilor's Meritorious Service Award. He also served as State Junior Councilor of the Oklahoma DeMolay Association 1969 and 1970. As a Senior DeMolay he received the Legion of Honor the highest honor conferred by DeMolay. The award is conferred on a Senior DeMolay for outstanding leadership in some field of endeavor or for success in fraternal life, including adult service to DeMolay
He later served as Chapter Dad at Will Rogers Chapter, sponsored by Oklahoma City Lodge #36, were he received the Cross of Honor, a distinctive honor that can only be given to a member of an Advisory Council. It denotes three or more years of conspicuous meritorious service to a Chapter, and exceptionally outstanding efforts on behalf of DeMolay.
He was a member of Oklahoma City Masonic Lodge #36, and receive his 32 from the Guthrie Scottish Rite, where he was a long time member of the Senior DeMolay 31st degree team.
He was also a member of the India Shrine in Oklahoma City, and was a member of the Sport Motorcycle Team.
One of his most enjoyable times, was as a long time member of the Oklahoma City Corvette Club, where he also served as President.
His family and the people that loved him will miss him. Memorial Services will be held 1pm Saturday March 14, at the New Covenant Christian Church.
