Obituary

Wilfred Perry Neel was made whole and received his greatest blessing on January 12, 2022 when he was greeted at Heavens gates and able to finally meet his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. He was born on December 30, 1931, in Mitchell County Texas to Abbie Lee Wilson Neel and Charlie Fulton Neel in his Grandparents house. He was the fifth of nine children born into this family. They were a farming family and were by todays standard considered very poor although he didnt know it. They raised all of their food, so they always had a meal on the table. Because they were cotton farmers in West Texas, rarely did he ever start school until after Christmas. He and his siblings had to pick the cotton crop since at that time there were no machines to do it. They had no books, but his Daddy would tell stories and his Momma read to him from the Bible. He would help with household chores but received no allowance. Perry dropped out of school and went to work in a grocery store in a small town nearby during his ninth-grade year to help support their family of then six people since his Daddy had gone blind before he was 50 years old. He would work 12-hour days during the week and 15-17 hours on Sunday making $28 a week. In 1951, he moved away from home and went to work at a grocery store but would return home on weekends to attend church. Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays were important to him and his family. In 1952, he hitchhiked to Bethany where he again found employment at another grocery store to pay his bills. It was then he received his GED and began attending Bethany Peniel College. There he met his sweetheart, Barbara Jean Pugh from Kansas. After a two-year courtship, they were married in Kansas. After marrying, Perry held various jobs from selling Bibles to again working in a grocery store, warehouse work, selling stainless steel cookware and razors for Schick Electric Shave. He pastored a church for a short time. They had one daughter in 1956, Nancy Annette. He became his own boss in 1962 and operated vending machines and as an outside interest drove charter buses. Soon after, he and Barbara developed a love of travel and visited every one of the states in the United States. They also traveled abroad after he became involved with the Lions Club where he served a year as a District Governor. All of their adult life they were involved at Bethany First Nazarene Church where he served as an usher and a Sunday School teacher to Junior High School boys. He was always greeting people at church that were visiting and would occasionally invite strangers home for Sunday lunch. His family and close friends would poke fun at him and accuse him of "working the crowd" and said he must be running for Mayor of BFC. Nancy recalls her parents kneeling at their bedside nightly in prayer. She said they never spoke bad of anyone. They were such good examples of Christian parents. After his sisters husband was killed in a work-related accident, he stepped in and became a surrogate father to her four children, particularly her son, Willie. He and Barbara invited him to live with them a year while he was in high school. He also invited Willie as well as two nieces to travel on vacations with them. They enjoyed camping in tent trailers and RVs and took many family trips. Just say the word "go" and their eyes would light up. Near or far they were ready. Once they had grandchildren, they would load them in the RV and off they would go leaving Nancy and Doug to meet them there via plane. He loved the "little people" in his life. Perry and Barbara always lived by the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would want them to do to you." Another saying he lived by was, "if a job is worth doing its worth doing right." Hes had to wait longer to make his final trip to join his bride in Heaven, but we are sure she waited patiently for him to arrive. Perry was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Pugh; parents, Charlie and Abbie Neel; his six sisters; two brothers; son-in-law, Douglas Scheiern; and great-grandson, Caleb Neel Scheiern. He leaves behind one daughter, Nancy Annette Scheiern; grandchildren, Krista Brooke Hands (Jeff), Ginger Michelle Montgomery (Tony), Christopher Neel Scheiern (Stephanie); and eleven living great-grandchildren: Temesgen, Lelise, Abigail, Elias, Camberlee and Jewel Hands; Colton, Madelyn and Harper Montgomery; and Mason and Diana Scheiern.
