Wilbur "Web" Dean Tipton was born July 20, 1928, in Picher, Oklahoma, the sixth child of James Marion Tipton and Ruby Leonard Tipton. When he was twelve years old, he first picked up a guitar, but it wasnt until he was fifteen that he began playing seriously. He had very nearly lost his arm in a hunting accident, and his doctor suggested playing guitar as a sort of physical therapy and a way to occupy his time while he recovered. From then on, music was his great love, at least until he met Dorothy.Web was working as an aircraft mechanic for Boeing and Learjet in Wichita in early 1952 when they met. Dorothy had come to Wichita to see an old high school friend, whose husband just happened to be a friend of Webs. Web and Dorothy fell for each other right away, and they married on October 5, 1952. While living in Wichita, they had four children: Debbie, Cliff, Janice, and Lori. Web kept their home filled with music; he loved to entertain with music and jokes, and their house became a neighborhood hub, especially once their children were old enough to join in with the band.In 1970, the Tipton family moved to Bethany, where Web began working for the city. In his free time, he kept playing music, counting down the days until he could retire and play music full time. In the meantime, he continued to play as much as he could, and especially enjoyed playing music with his children. Then, in 1987, his life was struck by tragedy when their son, Cliff, and grandson, Dallas, were killed in a plane crash. As difficult as that time was for him, Web continued to be a source of comfort for his family. After his retirement, Web enjoyed playing music all around the state and across the country. He performed with many different bands over the years, the most recent being The Double Deuce Band and The Country Gentlemen. He also particularly enjoyed having his children and grandchildren join him on stage. Web was very involved in Oklahomas western swing music culture. He was a past president of the Oklahoma State Fiddlers Oklahoma City chapter and won many awards for his musical contributions. He was inducted into the Western Swing Music Hall of Fame in 2000, and in 2013, he was honored with the AARP Indian Elder recognition as a Native American Elder who had positively impacted the community.Dorothy passed away in 2016; they had been married for nearly 64 years. Without her, Webs health declined, and he passed away peacefully in his sleep at home at the age of 90. Viewing will be Sunday, 11am-9pm, with family present from 5-7pm at Mercer-Adams. Services will be Monday, October 22, 2:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel.
