Wilbur Lawrence Takemire was born on February 22, 1914 in Silver Lake, Kansas. As a small boy his family moved to Topeka, Kansas. He was one of the first graduates of the new Topeka High School. He met June Pruett and they loved riding his Harley-Davidson. She said she would not marry him unless he went to church. When he went to a revival with her he said, "God got a hold of me and turned my life around. He changed me from the person I used to be." Wilbur never strayed from God's path for him. He was married to June for 47 years and they lived in Newton, Kansas. They adopted a son, Ralph, who died in 2005.
Wilbur was a faithful employee of the Santa Fe Railroad for 31 years. He was also a veteran of World War II and the Korean War serving in the U.S. Navy on a Naval Destroyer Escort.
After June died, Wilbur moved to Bethany, Oklahoma where he married Ruby Holmsley, the sister of Leon Jennings, his pastor. He and Ruby spent 16 happy years together until she died of Lou Gehrig's Disease. Wilbur patiently cared for her until the end.
In 2001, Wilbur married Anna Lee Unruh-Pendergast. As this was a late chapter in their lives, they asked God for at least five years together before either departed for heaven. God in His great kindness gave them 10 years together. Wilbur is survived by Anna Lee and all her family who loved him so dearly! Wilbur was a true Christian gentleman in every sense of the word. He loved his Sunday School class and declared it was his duty to get the microphone, the chairs, and the hymnals ready for class and to leave the room tidy and locked when class was over.
Wilbur is also survived by a niece of his first wife, June. She is Shirley Davis of Topeka, Kansas. Those going before him were all his immediate family including one sister, Mildred, who died in 2008.
Wilbur would like to be remembered for his frequent admonition "to live one day at a time" and when problems came he would always say, "Well, now ...don't get excited!"
We all love you, Wilbur, and you have blessed our lives tremendously on our journey.
