Wesley Eugene "Gene" Bellamy, Jr. was born in Oklahoma City on March 19, 1936 to W.E. and Lena Bellamy. He passed away at the age of 87 after a long bout with cancer.
Gene loved life and lived his to the fullest extent. Those who had the privilege of knowing Gene will remember him for his kind, caring and funny personality as well as his infectious smile. He was also a very generous person who never met a stranger.
Gene graduated from Putnam City High School in 1954 and then graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1958. He was a member of the Oklahoma Air National Guard for several years. He spent his professional career in the Property and Casualty Insurance field. Gene worked with a large national insurance company as a personal lines manager for 20 years before retirement. He went on to become a part owner and Vice President of an independent insurance agency. He retired again after 20 more years.
Gene had a well-rounded life filled with lots of activities. During his early years, he played the accordion and piano. He also showed hogs, horses, dogs, cats, and rabbits in 4-H. In high school, Gene was a member of the square-dancing team. During his college years at Oklahoma State University, he was the Head Cheerleader and the OSU Pep Council President. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Gene was always an animal lover. In his later years, he raised Zebu Cattle, KuneKune pigs, Arabian Horses, Quarter Horses, a Saddle Show Mule and a herd of miniature donkeys. Those were just a few of his "hobbies."
Gene will be best known as a legend in the dog show world. He started showing Boston Terriers in high school and continued to do that for a number of years. In the early 2000s, he bought his first Toy Fox Terrier and then another and another. He was very successful with his Toy Fox Terriers. He had many champions and grand champions through the years. He says his favorite memory was when his dog, Catcher, became the first Toy Fox Terrier Platinum Grand Champion of record. Catchers grandmother was also the first Toy Fox Terrier Grand Champion of record a few years back. Genes top performing dogs have been invited to participate in the iconic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show multiple times. He was recently honored for 50 years of service as an American Kennel Club conformation judge.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, Wesley Bellamy; his mother, Lena Bellamy; and his wife, Virginia Bellamy. He is survived by his son, Daniel Bellamy; daughter, Kathy Damrill; son-in-law, Jack Damrill; and grandchildren, Mitch Malherbe and his wife, Shelby, Brooke Malherbe, Kaitlyn Damrill and Kelsie Damrill.
Viewing will be held Friday from 9am-8pm at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service in Bethany. A graveside service will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens on Saturday, May 20 at 11:00 am.
