Cecil "Wayne" Callahan was born April 18,1935 to Wilford and Lois Callahan in Quanah, TX. He passed from his earthly home in Oklahoma City on May 25, 2021.
Wayne moved to Blythe, California as a young child and moved again to Marysville, California, where he spent his teen years with both of his parents and his brothers Marvin and Alan. Waynes mother frequently spoke of him as a good son. He was obedient, helpful, and respectful. He cared for her in her later years, helping her in many ways. Waynes dad, Wilford, and his brother, Marvin, preceded him in death.
Wayne left California to attend Southwestern Bible College in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It was there that he met Caroline Callahan and decided to make her his wife. They were friends with eleven other couples from Southwestern that all decided to get married around the same time. These couples have remained lifelong friends, taking trips together, celebrating anniversaries and birthdays, crying and laughing together, and holding each other up in prayer through the years. Wayne cherished these friendships and loved each person dearly. He was preceded in death by several members of this group, but Wayne is enjoying a grand reunion in heaven today.
Wayne and Caroline made their first home in Oklahoma City where their oldest child, Cindi, was born. They decided to move to Sacramento, California in 1962 after which two more children were born, Lisa, and David. The children remember fun times with their dad, including trips to the zoo, camping, gardening, fishing, and vacations back to Oklahoma. While living in Sacramento, Wayne worked for the Libby Canning Company. The family attended Abundant Life Pentecostal Holiness Church, where Wayne served as Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He also played on the churchs softball team. Wayne never just "attended" church. He found a way to serve in some capacity in every church he attended.
In 1970, Wayne felt God calling him into ministry in a different form, the call to preach and pastor a church. The family moved to Oakland, California where Wayne pastored Faith Chapel, a small Pentecostal Holiness church located in the heart of Oakland. God used Pastor Callahan to touch many lives, including the lives of servicemen that were stationed in the Bay Area and needing a place to connect. His home became their home, and they became his spiritual children.
Wayne also partnered with the local Teen Challenge and helped mentor young men dealing with drug addictions. These men experienced the saving power of Christ through the love shown by Wayne Callahan. He loved people, and he took the time to invest in their lives. Wayne moved the church to a new building in San Leandro and continued his ministry there. Many families that attended still hold Wayne close in their heart because of his influence on their lives.
In 1976, Wayne and Caroline both felt that God was moving their lives in another direction. Wayne resigned from his pastorate and moved the family back to Oklahoma City. He began working for Servicemaster and eventually took a job with AFLAC, selling supplemental cancer policies, retiring after 36 years. He continued to be involved in his local church in a teaching capacity, which he eventually decided was more what he was intended to do. Wayne taught the "Friendly Class" at Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God Church (OKC Faith) for many years. Wayne also played the steel guitar from his early years until the time of his homegoing and used his talents to praise and worship God.
During Waynes time in Oklahoma City, he assisted Caroline with a compassion ministry, distributing clothing and food to those in need. He also helped her renovate a house for unwed mothers. He participated in numerous missions trips, including a trip to New York to help Bill Wilson with a building project. Waynes hands were never idle, and whatever he did, he did with all of his strength.
God took Caroline home in February of 2006, and Wayne became a widower. In spite of his sadness and loneliness, he continued to serve at the church he was attending, River of Life Pentecostal Holiness, by teaching a class and playing his guitar. Wayne continued to seek Gods face and his will for his life. After six and a half years, God brought Margaret Claborn into his life and they were married in 2012. God gave Wayne a companion, and his joy was once again complete. He and Margaret enjoyed 9 wonderful years together. They established a restoration ministry, giving conferences at various churches in Oklahoma. Many lives were changed and hope restored. Wayne and Margaret faithfully attended New Life Church.
Pa-Pa Wayne delighted in his children and grandchildren. He attended every event he was able and cheered them on in all of their endeavors. He passed on his knowledge about cars when they began driving and made sure they knew how to check their oil and change a tire. He loved them with all of his heart and showed it in so many ways. When Wayne married Margaret, he inherited an extra family to love on and support, which he did well. He made it a priority to be at their events, also, and to love them like his own.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Callahan; mother, Lois Callahan; father, Wilford Callahan; brother, Marvin Callahan and an infant sister. Wayne is survived by his wife, Margaret Claborn; brother, Alan Callahan and sister-in-law, May; sister-in-law Louetta Wooten and husband, Ken; children, Cindi Tennison and son-in-law, Ron; Lisa Light and son-in-law, James; and David Callahan and daughter-in-law, Lori. He is also survived by his stepchildren,Travis Claborn and daughter-in-law, Christie; James Claborn and daughter-in-law Salena; and Leah Lowden and son-in-law Joe.
