Wanda Wiens, 80, was born in the small rural community of Delhi, Oklahoma on July 23, 1937. She left this world for heaven on April 23, 2018.
To the many people she encountered, be they friends or strangers, Wanda was the embodiment of graciousness, sweetness, and kindness. In addition to her three sons, she was a caretaker and second mother for many childrennieces, nephews, neighbors, and grandchildrenduring her long life. Children always brought her joy.
Devoted to her faith in Jesus, she could be found at her church each Sunday. In her long involvement with Metroplex Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and at church socials would often bring her specialty of beans and cornbread.
Born to a family of sharecroppers, Wanda grew up in Delhi and nearby Sayre, Oklahoma. After high school she moved to Bethany, Oklahoma where she attended Bethany Nazarene College. There she met her future husband, Durward (Rusty) Wiens.
They would marry in 1958, and later have three boys: Clifton, Randy, and Ron. Wanda kept house, and in addition to being a surrogate mother for many, she worked in a variety of jobs, including as a baker for over a decade at Kens Wholesale Bakery in Bethany.
In her later years, she enjoyed card games with friends, walking in the park with her grandchildren, and caring for her cats.
She is survived by her sons, Clifton, Randy and his wife Michelle, and Ron and his wife Charla. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Stephanie Buchanan and her husband, Will; Josh Wiens and his daughter, Gena; Rachel Wiens, Jake Wiens; Gregory Wiens; Hunter Wiens; and Madeleine and her husband, Ben Stucky. She is also survived by her brother, Ben Pope. In addition to her husband, Rusty, she was preceded in death by her sister, Cleta Sides.
During the last weeks of her life, in which she suffered from memory loss due to a stroke three years before, her granddaughter Madeleine asked if she had a favorite Bible verse. In response, Wanda recited verbatim the Gospel of John 3:16.
May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
