Walter Jackson Mathis, 93, passed away July 3, 2024 in Oklahoma City, OK. He was born August 4, 1930 in Enid, OK to Noah and Marybelle (Woods) Mathis. He was a proud veteran of the US Army, having served in the Korean War. He was stationed at the Army headquarters at Ft. Meade, Maryland as well as Ft. Eustis in Williamsburg, VA. Walter married Barbara Fay Stoll on September 9, 1952 in Stillwater, OK and they enjoyed 71 years together.
Walter was a mechanical engineer and retired from a successful career at Fife Corporation in Oklahoma City. Prior to that, he worked for 12 years as a high school machine shop teacher in Amarillo, TX. He was a longtime member of St. Luke's Methodist Church where he served as an usher for 30 years, taught Sunday School and was a member of the church board. Walter had a pilot's license and enjoyed flying small planes. He and Barbara loved traveling together, taking many trips around the country. He also served many families as a faithful volunteer at Deaconess Hospital for 22 years.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Mathis; and brother, Kenneth Mathis. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Mathis; daughter, Janet Carmichael (Curt); son, Dr. Dale Mathis (Mary Margaret); daughter, Donna Felts (Paul); daughter-in-law, Elaine Mathis; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and many other extended family members and friends.
Walter was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed for his kind, gentle, easy-going nature. He never met a stranger and loved telling stories. He was proud of his family and loved them well.
Viewing at Mercer-Adams will Thursday, 12pm-8pm, with family present from 4-6pm. Memorial services will be Friday, July 12, 11:00am at St. Luke's Methodist Church (Watchorn Chapel) in Oklahoma City.
