Obituary

Walter (Wally) E. Baumeister passed away from natural causes on July 28, 2010 at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Opal, and his sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Janie Baumeister and Jerry and Barbara Baumeister. He is also survived by grandson Ty Baumeister; granddaughters Tara Shreffler, Cathleen Guthery, and Karen Baumeister; and great-grandchildren Zeke Shreffler, Grace Shreffler, and Colton Guthery. Wally was born in Case, Missouri on March 10, 1919 and moved with his parents to Oklahoma at the age of 9, settling at the corner of Council Road and 36th Street. He was the son of Walter and Emma Baumeister and brother to Wilbert, Carl, Carmen, Melba and Bernice. He attended Britton High School for one year where he met his future wife before transferring to Central High School in Oklahoma City where he studied electronics and played football. He was the 410th man drafted for the United States in WWII where he served in the Army Signal Corp and was awarded the Purple Heart for combat injuries received in the South Pacific. After returning from the war, he settled on Council Road where he raised his family while working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. He was very much focused on his family and particularly so with respect to his two sons. In the late 1950s he, along with friends from the phone company and the Kiwanis club, started the first little league football league in Oklahoma City so that his sons would have a place to play. He was a religious man who taught Sunday school at Putnam City Baptist Church where he was a member for 59 years. He lived a full and admirable life, and was respected and loved by many. Funeral services will be at 10:00am, Monday, August 2, 2010 at Putnam City Baptist Church, 11401 N. Rockwell, Oklahoma City with interment in Memorial Park.
