Obituary

Virginia J. Smith passed away at her home on the morning of January 5, 2022a few days before her 98th birthday. A longtime resident of Oklahoma City, Virginia was born in Rural Hall, North Carolina to Rev. William and Ora Leigh Buck. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford Smith (deceased in 1998); sisters, Helen (died age 93) and Mildred (died age 103); and great-grandsons, Brendan, Matthew, and Kyle Lindsey. Virginia graduated high school during the early years of World War II and moved to Washington D.C. for employment. There she met her future husband as her supervisor at the War Department, saying yes (for good) after his third proposal. After the war, the couple moved to Hutchison, Kansas, where daughter, Marie Lindsey and son, Robert were born. In 1950, they moved to Oklahoma City. Here they remained, and daughter, Patsy Barker was born. All three of her children survive her, in addition to sons-in-law, Robert Lindsey and Wesley Barker; six grandchildren, Brian Lindsey, Heather Shaver, Zachary Smith, Jennifer Smith, Bryce Barker, and Courtney ODonnell; she is also survived by seven great-grandchildren. Professionally, Virginia had a career as a cosmetics department manager at Hyde Drug stores in Oklahoma City, from which she retired in 1990 (after 32+ years of service) at age 65. Popular with customers, she received numerous sales awards from cosmetics manufacturers, including an ocean cruise for herself and Clifford. Virginias father was a Lutheran pastor, and her Christian faith and her love of music were hallmarks of her life. She was active in church choirs, serving for a time as the choir director and substitute organist of Oklahoma Citys First Lutheran Church. An organ in her home enabled her to hold choir rehearsals there. Subsequently, she served in the choir of Immanuel Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church. . There are no gallery images.
