Obituary

Our dear mother, Victoria Ruth Stevenson, sadly passed away on January 23, 2024 at the age of 91. She was a wonderful mother and teacher, and loved God with all her heart.

Vicky began her teaching career in junior high school; however, she decided to go into special education and later dyslexic therapy. Vicky spent 32 years teaching in the public schools before moving into private dyslexic therapy for 28 years. Teaching children to read brought Vicky a sense of accomplishment and joy. All those who knew Vicky have heard her say, "I'm changing a child's life one student at a time."

Vicky was a founding member of Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Abilene, TX until April 2018. At that time, she became a member of the Metroplex Church of the Nazarene in Yukon, OK when she moved to be closer to family. Mr. and Mrs. Burrell Stevenson received the Distinguished Service Award from Trinity Church of the Nazarene May 23, 1989. Vicky loved her church and was active in all parts of church ministry. She was truly a prayer warrior.

Vicky was a member of several service organizations in Abilene, including Toastmasters. One of her speeches allowed her to go to the State Competition. She loved entertaining others with humorous speeches.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Burrell Stevenson; and daughter, Gwendolyn Stevenson. Surviving members of her family include daughter, Sandra Knauf (William); daughter, Nita Collins (Bart); grandchildren, Jennifer Shafarenko (Mike), Christopher Knauf (Jacqueline), Ashley Agee (Matt), and Jessica Cory (Clayton); brother, Jesse Walton; sister-in-law, Mickey; niece, Janie Stifler (James); great-niece Annabelle Stifler; and great-nephew, Jimmy Stifler. Her great-grandchildren, Gideon, Isaac, Nora, Ruth, and Claire brought happiness to her life.

The funeral was held at North's Funeral Home in Abilene, TX on January 27 with interment in Abilene Municipal Cemetery. To share a memory or condolence, visit www.mercer-adams.com.
