Obituary

Vic was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He had a personality that could light up any room. He loved sharing conversation and stories with his friends and family and would frequently captivate his listeners with stories of his many exploits throughout his personal and work-related travels and experiences. He loved spending time with family and friends and took any opportunity that he could for even a quick visit. Vic attended St. Marks United Methodist Church for many years and was close to the connections he made there. Vic hired into Tinker Air Force Base as a RADAR technician apprentice and throughout his 35+ year career would go on to work his way up through the ranks to Deputy Director. He took great pride and dedication in his craft, and never missed a beat. He loved retelling the exploits of his professional journey. Vic took exceptional pride in the fact that a high school graduate from Blanchard would go on to become second in charge of Tinker Air Force Base as the highest ranking civilian. He would also go on to earn the Air Force Meritorious Civilian Service Award medal. Vic was a lifelong OU Sooners fan and often took pride in the fact that he was a 57-year (and running) season ticket holder. He would often take his grandchildren along to games with him. Vics love of football and sports would lead him to go on and coach his sons and grandson in many sports including football, basketball, and baseball. It would be hard pressed to think that he ever missed watching or listening to more than a handful of Sooner games over his many years of interest. His wife Sharon, an OSU graduate and he were one of the greatest examples of a "House Divided" in Oklahoma history. Vic loved working the Daily Oklahoman crossword and Sudoku puzzles. He would often amaze his family, especially his grandsons with his vast knowledge of pop culture throughout history, geographical, historical, scientific, musical, and military knowledge. He enjoyed watching TV and documentaries to expand his horizons around every corner. Vic was a student of life and never missed an opportunity to increase his knowledge. Vic loved to garden and do yard work and took great pride in the appearance of his flower beds and yard. He also loved fishing, dancing, and reading. Vic was a collector of fascinating items. He had many collections but some of his most notable were an extensive collection of knives, coins, stamps, and books. Vic was preceded in death by wives, Virginia Doherty and Sharon Shanks; and sons, David, Dan, and Steve. He is survived by sons, Mark Gammill and Mark Motley; grandchildren, Chris, Bryce, Justin, Blake, and Madison; and great-grandchildren, Nova and Nora. Vic was a light in the dark, a calm in the storm, and a voice of reason in a chaotic world. He will be missed, and his love will not be forgotten.
