Obituary

Versel H. Rice, 92, of Warr Acres, went to be with his heavenly father on January 9, 2011. The man with the million dollar smile! Versel was born July 14, 1918 on a farm west of Edmond to Eugene M. and Lottie M. (Lowe) Rice. He was a 4-H member for several years. He graduated from Oklahoma A & M (OSU) University in 1940. He married Audrey McKinnis at Hopewell Church in 1941. Together, they had one daughter, Jan Lack, and one son, Lee. He was a farmer/rancher all his life. He loved the land. He loved working on the ranch and raising cattle. Along with ranching, his 31 years of teaching began at Piedmont High School where he sponsored World War II veterans in Agriculture Training. At Putnam City High School he taught agriculture and biology and was the 4-H sponsor. He was also textbook advisor, auditorium director and audio visual teacher. Upon retirement from teaching, he worked with land and oil leases, real estate and traveled the world with Oklahoma Retired Citizens Travel Club. Mom and dad were able to go to South America and railroad across Canada because Jan and Dan accompanied them. Jan and Dan were caregivers, luggage carriers, and wheelchair pushers. Dad enjoyed seeing all the animals in Africa. Dad dreamed of the day when he could return to Africa with Lee. During his 4-H years, he guided Jan and Lee in show pigs, cattle, and chickens along with other 4-H projects at the county fairs. He enjoyed helping others, providing for his family, attending musicals and concerts, and traveling to six of the seven continents. He was a member of Tulakes Baptist Church and loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lottie Rice; brother, Harold Lee; and sister, Gertrude Jane. Versel is survived by his most dedicated and most precious loved wife, Audrey; daughter Jan and husband Dan Lack; son Lee and wife Vivian; five grandchildren: Gerald and Jana Clark, Kathy Dudley, Kerry and Christy Rice, Joe and Kristi Rice, Joy and Jason Filer; six great-grandchildren: Zachary Clark, Heaven Clark, Danielle Dudley, Tyler Rice, Jed Rice, Cameron Rice. Special thanks to caregivers: Mary Gammon, Camille Njeugoue, Pascal Langsi. Family and friends gathering will be from 6:008:00pm on January 11 at Mercer-Adams. Services will be at Tulakes Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Cemetery, Edmond, OK.
