Obituary

Brummett, Verne Edwin, born Oct. 18, 1940, died April 25, 2010. Verne was born to Verne Lloyd and Fannie Ann Brummett in Guthrie, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Lloyd Brummett. Survivors include his wife of nearly 33 years, Shirley Brummett and his four children and grandchildren: Ruth, Rob & Aaron Rickey; Verne, Carla, Emily & Nathan Brummett; Robb & Phoebe Brummett; and Brandon Brummett and his grand-dog Busta. Also surviving is his sister, Ruth Brummett Zardezed and her family. Verne attended Guthrie, Lynch and graduated from Deer Creek High School in 1958. He attended Central State College. He retired medically from Red Rock Distributing Co. in 1991 as a Vice President and General Manager following 21 years of service. After retirement, he served as a volunteer at Windsor Hills Elementary School, where his wife teaches. Verne spent countless hours working with children in kindergarten and the reading lab and served as the school Santa every Christmas for two generations of students. He was extremely proud that in 1997, when he received the Golden Apple award for his service at school, his wife Shirley was also Teacher of the Year that same year. Verne lived life to the fullest and had a great passion for many things including: coaching hundreds of children in basketball and softball, Bill Elliott and Kasey Khane and the entire Nascar experience, Sooner Womens Basketball, Sooner Football, OKC Thunder, Food Network cooking shows- especially Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, Budweiser, spicy Mexican food and spending time with his grandchildren Emily and Nathan. No day was complete without Verne making people laugh and subjecting them to his favorite repertoire of bad jokes. Verne was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church for years and remained close to many members of that congregation. Verne transferred membership to Putnam City United Methodist Church and became an integral part of this church. He was the President of the Disciples of Light Sunday School Class and wrote the newsletter for them. He planned trips to Branson, MO for the class and loved organizing a wonderful experience for his friends and churchmates. He prided himself that these fun trips also worked to raise money for the church mission trips. Verne was also active in the choir. Verne passed away from complications of congestive heart failure. He owed much of his health and vitality over the last few years to Dr. Lawrence Deck and Dr. Phil Adamson. Since July of 2009, Verne was in a study with Dr. Adamson, to assist doctors in recognizing and treating the effects of CHF. Dr. Adamson is currently authoring a book on the subject and one chapter is dedicated to his treatment of Verne. One of his lasting legacies will be that he allowed the doctors to study and learn from his condition so that they will be better able to treat the disease in the future and help others with CHF to live longer, fuller lives. The family is grateful to all his medical care providers both at Mercy Hospital and Oklahoma Heart Hospital. Special thanks is given to everyone in Dr. Decks office, his favorite nurse Carol and the rest of the wonderful team at Dr. Adamsons office, Cassie at Mercy and Cheryl at Oklahoma Heart. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, you please make a donation to Putnam City United Methodist Church or Windsor Hills Elementary. Services will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 3:00 pm at Putnam City United Methodist Church. The family has no doubt that Verne is now in heaven, with a new audience for his jokes and has already started organizing a trip to Branson for the angels.
