Verna Lee
Schones
Aug 9, 1933 — Jun 29, 2026
Verna Lee (Prescott) Schones, 92, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed away on June 29, 2026. She was born on August 9, 1933, in Dill City, Oklahoma, to Elzia Curtis Prescott and Maggie Mae (Montgomery) Prescott. She grew up in the Foss, Oklahoma area and graduated from Foss High School in 1951. She attended Southwestern State College. On February 3, 1952, she married James Pete Schones in Foss. They lived in Oklahoma City and Keller, Texas, before making their forever home in Bethany, Oklahoma. Verna was a lifelong homemaker who took great joy in cooking, baking, sewing, and quilting.
Verna was heavily involved with Concordia Life Plan Community, where she sang with a group that ministered to the skilled nursing and memory care communities, was a member of the drum circle, and also volunteered for the Good Samaritan Fund. She lovingly cared for her plants and nurtured cuttings from her personal collection, many of which continue to thrive in the hallways and homes of Concordia residents and staff. She was a devoted student of the Bible and faithfully attended worship services. Her apartment was decorated with Bible verses she had written by hand.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Elzia and Maggie Prescott; her husband of 63 years, James Pete Schones; brothers, Curtis Prescott and Kenneth Prescott; and sister, Nelda (Prescott) Sullivan.
She is survived by her son, James Allen Schones and his wife Melissa Lynne (Bibens) Schones of Norman; grandchildren, Amy Michelle Schones of Norman and David Allen Schones and his wife Courtney Rae (Gatlin) Schones of Grapevine, Texas; great-grandchildren, Hanna Rae Schones and Joseph Allen Schones; and beloved nieces and nephews, Glenn Prescott, Kerry Matherly, Cindy Kietzman, Kym Simmons, Stephen Schones, Debbie Slaughter, Jerry Glidewell, Joe Wayne Glidewell, and Bobby Brown.
A service to celebrate Verna's life will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, July 8 at Concordia Life Plan Community, 7707 W. Britton Road, Oklahoma City.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Verna's name to the Concordia Community Foundation (designation: Rev. Harold Kamman Chapel Fund) to support the expansion of the chapel at Concordia. (See donation link below)
