Obituary

Velma Viola Culbertson passed away Sunday evening, March 25, 2018 in Warr Acres, OK. She was born April 7, 1920 in rural St. Clair County, MO. Velma was the third child and the only daughter in a family of four children. Her parents, William S. Rosbrugh and Myrtle (Bull) Rosbrugh were devout Christians. They read the Bible regularly, faithfully attended church services and had family devotions each night. Converted at age eleven during a revival in a rural Methodist Church, she was baptized in a nearby creek. After high school, Velma attended what is now the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO, and then taught in a one-room school near Tipton, MO. On May 16, 1942, she married Nolan Culbertson, a childhood sweetheart. For the first two years of their marriage they lived in Clovis, NM. Velma wrote, "We made time for family devotions because we felt the sweetness of the fellowship of our home around the breakfast table together would be an important part of our preparation for daily living, and it made our lives richer in God." They joined the Church of the Nazarene in Clovis and in 1944 moved to Bethany, OK so Nolan could better prepare himself for the ministry and Velma could get more music training at what is now Southern Nazarene University. Two children, Nola and Howard, were added to their home. Velma became a full-time mother, seamstress and care-giver. She was always available when needed in the churches which Nolan pastored. She said her Christian calling was that of being an encourager who scattered seeds of love, joy and peace. After 23 years of pastoring Nazarene congregations in Arkansas and Oklahoma, Nolans health forced him away from the full-time ministry. So, in 1967, Velma and Nolan moved back to Bethany, OK where she got a job in the downtown Bethany TG&Y store. She worked for TG&Y stores for 17 years before retiring. For several years she taught a Sunday School class of three-year-olds at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. Family was always very important to Velma. In a brief autobiographical statement she wrote, "Times spent together are more valuable than money can buy. My heavenly father loved me with all His heart when He sent Jesus to save me. He has been my constant guide and faithful companion. It has been my prayer that each of my family will love Jesus with all of their heart and live for Him, and we can all be in Heaven together forever." Preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Velma is survived by her younger brother, Elvin Rosbrugh of El Dorado Springs, MO; daughter, Nola Swinhart and husband Hal; son, Howard Culbertson and wife Barbara; grandchildren, Shelley Knight and husband John, Brian Swinhart and wife Ronika, Rachele Floyd and husband Matthew, and Matthew Culbertson; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Physicians Choice Hospice for their compassionate help in caring for Velma over the past few years. Viewing for Velma will be Wednesday, 9am-9pm, with family present from 6-8pm at Mercer-Adams. Velmas funeral service will be Thursday, March 29 at 2 p.m. in the Mercer-Adams chapel near downtown Bethany. The interment will be immediately following at Resurrection Cemetery on Northwest Highway. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Culbertson Memorial Ministerial Preparation Scholarship fund at Southern Nazarene University. Funeral Service Thursday, March 29, 2018 02:00 PM Mercer-Adams Chapel 3925 N. Asbury Bethany, OK 73008
