Vance Edward Schwab was born September 6, 1941 in Konawa, OK to Ada Marcille Vance and Glenn Smith. He died November 21, 2009 at his home. He spent his early childhood in Konawa and moved to Oklahoma City for his high school years, graduating as part of the state championship football team of Northwest Classen High School in 1960. He attended Murray State College and OSU. In 1966, he entered the army, serving until 1969. His service included one tour in Vietnam, where he was a helicopter machine gunner with Bravo Troop, supporting the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Air Calvary in the central highland jungles. He received the Air Medal for 25 air assaults, as well as the Presidential Unit Citation as a member of the 1st Air Cavalry. In Vietnam he was twice injured, for which he received one Purple Heart, turning down a second. While in the service at Fort Sill, he fulfilled a dream and was selected to train horses for use in the vintage Centennial Half-section of Light Artillery in the Fort Sill Centennial Armed Forces Day 1969 Demonstration. For this, he received a Letter of Commendation. He was in the car sales business for many years in Oklahoma City and, finally, he retired to his 1st love of horse training and trading. His Christian faith led him to join the Church of Christ in Hennessey, OK. He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Smith; his brother, Greg Schwab, and many cousins. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Jane Schwab of Phoenix, AZ; his mother, Ada Marcille Vance Schwab of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his brother, Tony Schwab of Cromwell, OK; his sister, Angela Schwab of Prague, Czechoslovakia; his sister, Vickie Canady of Atlanta, GA; his brother, Glenn Smith of Edmond, OK; sister Karen Luce of Flower Mound, TX; and sister, Linda Simms of Little, OK. Visitation will be 9am-9pm Tuesday with the family present from 5-7pm at Mercer-Adams. Services will be Wed., Nov. 25, 9:00am at Mercer-Adams Chapel with interment to follow immediately in Maple Grove Cemetery, Seminole, OK.
