Obituary

Tommy Joe Hutter passed peacefully into his Heavenly Father's arms on February 11, 2024. He was listening to his favorite Amy Grant song, "Sing Your Praise to the Lord," and literally waited until the big finale at the end of the song.

Tom was born in El Dorado, Kansas, to John and Thelma (Thompson) Hutter. He grew up in Augusta, Kansas, surrounded by grandparents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He graduated from Augusta High School in 1964. Tom furthered his education at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas and earned a BS degree in Mathematics and Physical Education. He had a varied career life, starting as a math teacher, then moving into the petroleum field. After several years there, he moved into the field of finance and became a financial planner.

Tom met his "forever Valentine" Carey in a donut shop. They were married in July, 1969, a marriage that lasted 54 years.

Tom's greatest pleasure in life was being with his family, extended family, and friends who became like family. Family reunions were like Christmas to him. He also enjoyed being outdoors - camping, hiking, fishing, working in the yard and flower beds - he loved it all.

Tom was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church. He was a board member, church board secretary, and choir member when he and Carey lived in Independence, Kansas.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, John and Thelma; younger brother, Clint; and niece, Jeannie Hutter. He is survived by his wife, Carey; daughter, Sarah Brown and her husband Mark; granddaughters, Reese and Kendall Brown; and older brother, John Hutter.

Friends and family will remember Tom as a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul.

A special thanks goes to the ICU staff at Canadian Valley Integris and staff at Select Specialty Hospital for the wonderful care and kindness they bestowed on Tom.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Salvation Army in Tom's memory.
