Thurman Eugene Coburn
Thurman E. Coburn, the seventh of eight children born to Lud Eugene and Mattie Owens Coburn, was born August 10, 1919. He grew up on a farm in Sabine Parish, Louisiana during the depression years when there were few luxuries but plenty of love and encouragement.
Following high school, Thurman enlisted in the United States Navy where he served honorably for nine years. He earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer, the highest rank attainable by a non-commissioned officer. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during WWII, mostly aboard the destroyers, The USS Borie and USS Goff. The USS Goff, one of the ships on which he served, was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for the offensive which was largely responsible for eliminating the threat of German submarines in the shipping supply routes to Africa and Europe.
Following his discharge from the Navy, he moved to Bethany, Oklahoma, with his wife Dorothy, and infant son, Gene. He earned his undergraduate degree from Bethany Nazarene College (now SNU). Completing his Ph.D in Psychology at the University of Oklahoma, he practiced in Oklahoma City until the age of 83. Additionally, he was an adjunct psychology professor at SNU and was responsible for initiating a counseling program for his local church.
Dr. Coburn was a long time member of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and served on the church board for many years. He loved the fellowship of his "Kumjoinus" class.
Dr. Coburn was predeceased by his parents, five brothers, one sister, his first wife, Dorothy Knippers Coburn and their son, Gene, and his lovely second wife, Annette Dipboye-Coburn. Survivors include his sister, Wilma Whaley of Louisville, Kentucky; special nephew, Bobby Chandler of Florien, Louisiana; step-daughters, Debby Dipboye-Griffin (Jerry) of Bethany and Jan Dipboye-Collum (Mark) of Oklahoma City; step-grandchildren, Andrea Webb (Jason), Evangeline Shockley (Jason), Doug Collum (Kate); step-great-grandchildren, Eva and Olivia Webb and Irie Collum; and many beloved nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.
