Obituary

Sylvia Saen (Bradley) Gibson peacefully went home to her Lord on June 14, 2024 (her birthday) at age 87. She will be remembered for her sweet spirit, her gift of hospitality, her volunteer skills, and the love she continued to show to her family.

Saen, as she loved to be called, was born June 14, 1937 in Oklahoma City. She was the first born to Col. B. W. Bradley, and Louiza Z. (Bellinghausen) Bradley.

The family lived in different locations with her military career father who had many post assignments including Germany and Japan and five stateside posts. He retired and the family moved to Ponca City, OK where he was the office manager and accountant for Parker Petroleum Co.

Saen graduated from St. Mary's High School in Ponca City, attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College (Tonkawa, OK) and received an Associate degree in Business.

At college, her sophomore year, she was the captain of the cheerleaders for the football team and met the man who would become her first husband, Johny Lee Robertson. He transferred to Oklahoma State University and finished his last two years on the varsity football squad for the Cowboys and earned a business degree. They married in 1960.

They moved to Albuquerque, NM, when Johny was recruited and hired as a financial department manager at Sandia National Labs. Saen found employment with several commercial businesses in that area.

In 1974 they relocated to Bethany, OK, when Johny was hired at Western Electric Co. in the financial department and Saen took the position of a PBX line assembly manager also at Western Electric.

Following Johny's death in 1980 Saen continued working at Western Electric where she met, dated and married Eugene H. Gibson on August 4, 1984. Gene's first wife had previously passed. Saen and Gene each managed several departments at the OKC plant and chose early retirements. Saen welcomed Gene's adult children Sherman and Karen Gibson and their growing families.

They were both fully involved in the Telephone Pioneers of America, which is the retirees organization of Western Electric Co. They served as active members and officers. They traveled with that group on many international trips including Paris, London, and Hong Kong. With that group and on their own tours the vacationed and attended festivals in Hawaii, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, California and Florida.

They were avid country music dancers and nearly every summer they visited "Fan Fair" in Nashville.

After 31 years of marriage, Gene passed on August 1, 2014. Following some medical problems, Saen moved to Brookdale Senior Living Center in Norman in August 2017. She amazed the staff with her keen knowledge of sports, especially college and NFL football. She was a true Dallas Cowboys fan and scheduled her TV watching to always include the games.

The last seven years Saen appreciated the care and love of the staff at Brookdale Senior Living Center and Traditions Hospice. Cindy, Crystal, Staci, Naomi, Iris, Wendy, Miranda and the daily staff took good care of Saen and her cat Gabby. While in the assisted living center, Saen enjoyed the newspaper, and current novels as a voracious reader. She looked forward to entertainment such as blue grass musicians visiting the living center.

She was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands. She is survived by brother Tony Bradley and wife Marles, of Norman, OK and niece Andrea Leigh (Bradley) Hearn and her husband George Hearn of Nashville, TN. (Saen called Andrea her "Nice Niece from Nashville".

And, survived by her late husband's son and family,

Sherman and Shannon Gibson, grandchildren, Joseph Gibson, Kayla Hazlet and Jonathan Gibson and great grandchildren Mason and Lincoln Hazlet. They all considered her "grandma Saen".

and late husband's daughter and family,

Karen Dawson, Danelle Botchlet, husband Adrian, great grandchildren Aiden and Jett, Jennifer Cochran, husband Rodney, great grandchildren Nicole and Natalie.

Saen will be remembered as an avid and talented quilter. She was active with the Oklahoma City Quilting Guild. Her home always included some beautiful cats, dogs and quilts on animal themes. She won ribbons repeatedly at the Oklahoma State Fair for her exhibited works in the quilt competitions.

She and Gene volunteered countless hours to the Oklahoma Blood Institute registering donors including at the time of the Murrah Building bombing and many blood drives around the Oklahoma area.

Their home displayed New Mexico themed artwork collected the years in Albuquerque plus an extensive collection of Garfield characters and other favorite items. One room displayed a Christmas tree year round! She decorated with the myriad quilted pieces as wall hangings, table linens, and clothing pieces. She was proud of her 1978 Silver Anniversary Corvette. Weekends were often spent boating and fishing at their cabin on Lake Eufaula. They enjoyed neighborhood parties, fishing at nearby Lake Overholser, their hot tub, manicuring their azaleas, vegetable gardening and family holiday gatherings. Saen's handmade gifts will be precious forever.

Saen was a much loved, intelligent and a truly classy lady. She graced the lives of all who knew her.

Saen's family will receive guests at Mercer-Adams on Thursday, June 20 from 5:00 to 7:00pm.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.
