Spencer McMartin, 73, died peacefully at his home January 7, 2019. He was born May 31, 1945 in Altus, OK to Donald and Mickey (Huffer) McMartin.
He proudly served with the Oklahoma National Guard as a corpsman from 1965 to 1971. After leaving the Guard, he began work with the Oklahoma Highway Department followed by his Land Surveying career with Bob McCutchan of MAPCO and later Curtis Hale of Hale and Associates.
Spencer loved tending to his vegetable garden and giving the produce to anybody he could. He never actually ate the veggies himself. He had an affinity for baseball (but hated the Red Sox), he liked ice hockey, bowling, and of course, OU Sooners football. He loved a lot of things, but most of all, he loved his family. He always reached out to extended family, not to exclude the Huffers and the McMartins in New York. He loved his grandchildren and he loved his dogs, which were always Irish Setters.
He was definitely a social butterfly who never once met a stranger. Many of his friends will recount his infamous sense of humor, which he apparently had since his earliest days of adulthood. He was famous for his 1967 Chevelle Malibu, which he kept until gifting it to Anji in the summer of 2017.
He will be most remembered for his "colorful", yet sometimes questionable sense of humor, his 67 Chevelle, his "Mr. T starter set", his charismatic personality, and his eerie resemblance to his favorite actor, Clint Eastwood, with whom he shared a birthday.
Spencer was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Derek McMartin and wife Jenni; daughter, Anji Holley and husband Rick; brother, David McMartin and wife Debbie; 4 grandsons, Rhett, Colten, Parker and Reece; nieces and nephews Chris, Kimberly, Jimmy Don, and Jayme; numerous extended family and many, many friends.
Viewing will be Friday, 9am-9pm, with family present from 5-7pm at Mercer-Adams. Services will be Saturday, January 12, 2:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel.
As per his wishes, Spencers remains will be interred in a private ceremony next to his mother in Tipton, OK at a later date.
