Setsuko Sue Mikawa
March 23, 1932 - November 06, 2022
Sue passed away Sunday night, 13 days after her beloved Roy passed. Her love for him was all encompassing and unwavering. The two were married 69 years in which they remained deeply devoted and dependent on one another. They had a love that stood the test of time, even when met with strife and hardship. A love that grew stronger every day through Christ, and now a love that is eternal.
Sue was the 4th born child of 7 children to Kiyoshi and Shikiye Koyano. While her mother was visiting family in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, Sue decided to arrive unexpectedly. Shortly after her birth, Shikiye and her newborn baby girl Setsuko would travel home to the farm in Brighton, CO., USA. Sue and her mother were very close; they loved traveling back home to Japan to spread Gods word. They were also known for having races on the farm, "who could hoe the row the fastest," Sue always won. From an early age Sue had a love for animals and a green thumb, so living on the farm played well into her interests. In high school, she took a home economics class and picked up sewing, a skill she would carry her whole life. In 1950, she graduated from Brighton High School with her best friend, Louise Mikawa. Louise arranged for Sue and her brother, Roy, to accompany her and her significant other on a double date, and so they say, "the rest is history!"
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mikawa were married on January 18, 1953. Together, Sue and Roy had four sons. As she was with her mother, Sue was very close with her sons and extremely proud of the men they became. She was the ultimate Mom and Grandma. You could always find her by her sewing machine, in her garden, or in her kitchen. She also had a deep love for God, which she demonstrated by spreading the Gospel, teaching VBS, preparing food, and participating in church activities at Linwood Methodist Church (where she had been a member for 50 years). She juggled all this while having a fulltime job at Western Electric for 25 years. In her later years, she stayed active as a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, a member of the Windsor Hills Bowling league, and an active card player. Sue had a competitive nature and often brought home first place. Sues most memorable attribute was her happy demeanor, as she was never found without a smile on her face, often accompanied by a laugh that carried throughout the halls. Her family will miss that smile and laugh dearly.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; her parents, Kiyoshi and Shikiye Koyano; brothers, Wesley, Mason, and Roy; and sister, Atsuko. Sue is survived by her four sons, Robert, Gary (Deborah), Russell (Sharon), and Kevin; her brother, Arthur; her sister, Lily; her grandchildren, Suzanne (Robert), Sarah, Erica (Josh), Daniel, Luke, Jenna Mae (Ryan), Jonas (Anna), and Anna (Chris); and her great-grandchildren, AJ, Brittany, Malcolm, Wells, Maverick, Evander, Michael, Zander, James, Posey, Yasmina, Aumin, Jenna, Kamron, Taryn, and Lily.
We would like to acknowledge and thank all the organizations that helped take care of Sue in her later years: Hefner Mansions of OKC, Right-At-Home, Fountainbrook of Midwest City, and Humanity Hospice. Your kindness and service to Sue will never be forgotten.
