Sarita M. Pugh, 95, of Oklahoma City died Thursday. She was born in New Orleans, La. Aug. 29, 1915. At a young age she moved with her parents, Alfred and Louise B. Mendoza to Yukon, where her father came to manage the Dobry Mill. She graduated from Sophie Newcomb prep school in New Orleans in 1933, and enrolled that same year at the University of Oklahoma. While at OU, she pledged Delta Gamma Sorority and was named a Sooner beauty queen by the Sooner yearbook. She also represented her sorority in the Whirlwind Panic Contest sponsored by the OU humor magazine. Another big honor for her at OU came when she won the title role of the Juggler in the Juggler of Notre Dame, a dance drama presented annually around Christmas by the OU Fine Arts Department. At the end of her first year of college, she married Senior Law Class President Paul Pugh and moved to Oklahoma City upon his graduation. They had four children and Sarita spent her time involved in a variety of activities, including 32 consecutive years as a member of PTA, along with other activities of her children. While her children were in college, she was active in the Beta Theta Pi Mothers Club, was President of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Mothers Club and President of the Gamma Phi Beta Mothers Club. She also was an officer in the Oklahoma Bar Association Auxiliary, was involved in the county bar association auxiliary, and was a leader in the auxiliaries of the state and national Trial Lawyers Associations, organizations, which her husband helped establish. She was long time member of Ridgecrest UMC, where she studied, developed and taught many devotionals. Her strong faith in the Lord was evident to all who knew and loved her. An avid reader, she participated for many years in several book clubs, and enjoyed china painting, braiding rugs, bowling, and knitting. Before her husbands death, Sarita also liked to spend time at the lake with her family water skiing, boating, and fishing. Until her very last years, she and family or friends were often off on a sailing cruise. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Ruth Collopy, and one grandson, Kyle Pugh. She is survived by her children: sons Al and wife, Judy, Reno, NV, Gordon and wife, Gloria, OKC, Roger and wife Kristi, OKC, and a daughter, Patricia Pugh Whitnah and husband Russ of Downingtown, PA. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Kelley Pugh Shealy, Juli Pugh Hudson, Melody Pugh Wortmann, Jill Whitnah Young, Kim Pugh Hamilton, Brian Pugh, Ran Whitnah, Lauren Whitnah Wells, Sara Whitnah Wise, Alyssa Robare Pugh; 14 great grandchildren; daughters-in law, Teri Pugh and Ann Fields; and her dear friend and caregiver, Phillipa Mandewo and daughter Cecilia. Viewing will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mercer-Adams Funeral Home, 3925 N. Asbury in Bethany. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City. A Memorial Service will follow at noon at Ridgecrest United Methodist Church, N.W. 25th and Portland, with a reception at the church after the service.
