Obituary

Sarah B. (Stovall) Dixon, known as the "Hat Lady" was born April 29, 1921 in Macon, Georgia to Robert Stovall and Flora Wilder Stovall. Sarah died peaceably at the age of 91 while surrounded by her family. From High School she went on to complete Business School and married Arthur Slonecker. To this union was born two daughters, Sarah Arlene Slonecker Smith and Vickie Lynn Slonecker Dixon Drake. During WWII, she worked as a riveter at a plane factory. When the war ended she had a career singing on a radio station in Kansas City, MO. This marriage dissolved and in 1952 she moved to Oklahoma City, OK to start a career as an oil and lease secretary for Benson & Montan Oil Co. She met and married George J. Dixon, Jr. on April 15, 1960, adding two step-sons, Lester Leon Dixon and Lonnie Dale Dixon, to the family. Sarah became a member of Olivet Baptist Church in 1954 and was active in her church choir and as a teacher of young people. Sarah worked for Olivet for 20 years before retiring. Retirement brought traveling around the US in a RV for nine and a half years. When that ended, they settled in Muskogee, OK where they lived for 11 years. When health issues started, she moved to Oklahoma City, OK to be close to her daughters and resided with her husband George at the Forest Glade Retirement Center. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Robert Stovall Jr. and James Stovall. Sarah is survived by her husband, George; daughters, Arlene & Vickie; step-sons, Lester & Lonnie; seven grandchildren; eight great- grand-children; and four great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Olivet Baptist Church Music Department. Viewing will be Friday, 9am-9pm, with family present from 6-8pm, at Mercer-Adams. Funeral service will be Saturday, March 9, 2:00pm at Olivet Baptist Church with interment in Bethany Cemetery.
