Obituary

Sally Duffy Akin, 67, a life-long resident of Oklahoma City, OK, passed away on Sunday, July 22nd after a short but courageous battle with cancer. A 1963 graduate of Putnam City High School, Sally was a cheerleader and basketball homecoming queen. Forever a Cowboy, she completed her education with a B.A. in Education at Oklahoma State University in 1967. While at OSU, Sally married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Harold Akin. Sally was the ultimate giver and action-taker. Although petite in stature, her personality was huge, her voice strong, her laugh loud and contagious, and her presence unforgettable. To everything Sally dedicated herself, she did with her entire heart and commitment. It was fitting that upon the arrival of her first grandchild, Sally chose the new name of Big Mama. Everything about this small lady was big! Sally's lifetime groups she loved include her weekly prayer group, monthly bunco group, and bridge club. Her lifetime was spent participating in her children's school organizations and athletic leagues. She was a long-time member of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, where she participated for decades in Sunday school classes. Sally was a talented woman in many ways. Hundreds of friends and family were touched and blessed by the gifts of Sally Akin. A painted or wallpapered room, a series of handmade bridesmaid dresses, nursery sets, recovered furniture, a creative poem or ode, a Halloween or school costume, athletic uniforms - you name it, Sally created it!! Her projects were never-ending and will never be forgotten by the many people she touched. From the time she was a small girl, Sally's life goal was to be a wife and mother. Through pursuit of this goal, she became a virtuous woman, Proverbs 31:10-31. Sally aka Big Mama is survived by Harold, her high school sweetheart and husband of 48 years; her four sons: Kevin, Jeff, Scott, and Zac; her daughters-in-law: Leslie, Tiffany, Reagan, and McKenzie; her nine precious grandchildren: Jake, Abbey, Katie, Jet, Ainsley, Owen, Brady, Hudson, and Carter; her brother Don Duffy of Bellingham, WA; her sister Susan Duffy Smith of Bastrop, TX; and many, many close friends that consider Sally their family. Memorial gifts may be made in her name to The American Cancer Society or Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Visitation with the family present will be Wednesday, 5-7pm at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service.
