Obituary

Ruth Porter nearly arrived at the 100-year mark! She was born in January 1921 to Arthur and Nellie McConaughey. She attended Wapello and Davis County schools in Iowa and Ottumwa High School. She received the Bachelor of Science Degree and Masters degree in English Education from Truman University. She taught in Wapello County, IA, Fremont Community and Ottumwa Community Schools. She retired from teaching in 1990. On July 4, 1942, she married Gerald Porter. Following his return from duty in the U.S. Army, they farmed in the Highland Center, IA area. She was a charter member of the Trinity Church of the Nazarene, Ottumwa, IA, and a long-time Sunday school teacher and board member. She was a teacher of the Womens Bible Study and active in other areas of church work. In 2003, she and her husband moved to Oklahoma City where they joined the Western Oaks Church of the Nazarene. She loved creating quilts to share with family and friends. She loved to fill Christmas shoeboxes for international children. Often a homemade doll quilt and a doll were included. Ruth believed that "every little girl should have a doll." She also enjoyed reading, Bible study and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald, parents and two sisters, Lila and Viola. Ruth is survived by a daughter, Ann (Anthony) and a son, Larry (Judy), all of Oklahoma City. Also, seven beautiful grandchildren, thirteen delightful great-grandchildren and one sweet great-great grandchild.
