On July 29, 2020, as her great-granddaughter so wisely stated, Ruth Marie Cotton went home twice. She was brought into her earthly home from the hospital one last time and entered her heavenly home for eternity only a few hours later. The Lord whom she loved with all her heart took her hand and said, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." She was a prayer warrior for her family, a devoted wife to her husband, Jim, and a proud mother to four sons. She lived a life full of honesty, hard work, and faithfulness.
Rarely a day went by that she didnt open her Bible and read the words God intended just for her. Each morning she looked lovingly across her coffee table at picture after picture of her children and grandchildren and prayed for each one of them by name. She enjoyed attending her Sunday School class at Council Road Baptist Church and sang the praises of her friend Louise for always making sure she had a way there.
Ruth was born December 3 on a stormy night in 1924 in a dugout just outside Butler, Oklahoma. She grew up with her older sister, Lil and her younger sister, Doris. On November 27, 1942 she married a smitten James "Jim" Neal Cotton in her sister Lils living room in Oklahoma City. Though Jim was drafted into the army air corps and stationed in many places, the two spent as much time as possible together. While Jim was away, Ruth and her sister Lil worked together as riveters at Midwest Air Depot which is known today as Tinker AFB. In addition to this job, Ruth also worked at Sheen Drug, Stereo City, and later retired from Oklahoma State Firefighters Association. During their life together, Ruth and Jim had four sons: Phil, Scott, Rex, and James. The two remained devoted to one another for 61 years until Jim went to heaven. Ruth always said he was the finest man she ever knew.
In her later life, Ruth adored visits from her grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to brag on each of them. One of her greatest joys was to be entertained by her many great-grandchildren. On her table, she always made sure to place a bowl of candy that she liked to call "grandbaby bait." Even at the age of 95, Ruth was able to remain in the comfort of her own home. While her physical presence has left us, her sharp wit, sage advice, and dry sense of humor will remain with all who knew her, and she will be missed.
Ruth is survived by four sons: Phil and wife Cherie, Scott and wife Karen, Rex, and James, all of OKC; one sister, Doris Lane Bunch; eight grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; and her sister, Lil Lane Staude.
