Rupert Smith passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at Integris Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City. He was born September 16, 1926, in Joplin, Missouri, to parents Harlie W. and Lulu May (Rupert) Smith. He and surviving wife, Willa (Pieper) Smith were married on September 20, 1951, and recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. To that union were born two children, Sharon Hankins and Stephen Smith, both of Oklahoma City, and grandchildren, Katie (Hankins) King & husband Greg of Bethany, OK; Kara Hankins of Nashville, TN; Braden Smith and Riley Smith, both of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by his two sisters, Ruth Herbert of Stouffville, Ontario (preceded in death by husband, Edward), and Mary Elizabeth Gunas of Putnam, CT (husband Peter) and a host of nieces and nephews.
Rupert graduated high school at the age of 16 and finished college at the age of 20. He taught high school in Salem, Ohio, then traveled in the Southeast, preaching and tuning pianos. He also took mission trips to Haiti and Cuba, singing and playing his guitar. He and wife, Willa, eventually settled in the Denver area. He enjoyed working for KC and Gates Construction companies in the construction of bridges in Wyoming and up into Canada. He and his family moved to Oklahoma City in 1964 where he formed his own light construction company - Artech Inc. He worked there until his retirement.
Rupert enjoyed singing in quartets and in his church choir. He particularly relished traveling with Willa; they took several trips to the Philippines and fishing trips to Alaska. His gardens were legendary (he grew the best tomatoes!), and he dearly loved spending time with family. Rupert never knew a stranger and made friends easily.
A service to honor his life will be held at Mercer-Adams, Bethany, OK, on Monday, November 27, 2017, at 11:00am.
