Roy Riunosuke Mikawa
June 21, 1925 - October 24, 2022
Roy passed peacefully surrounded by the love of his life, his wife of 69 years at the age of 97.
Roy was born June 21, 1925 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to Kazuma and Ume Mikawa. He was the third born child and the eldest son of 10 children. He and his siblings were first generation Japanese-American or "Issei" in Japanese. His responsibilities started at the young age of 12, tending to the farm, and driving the produce truck down the mountain to the local market. Roy excelled in school, as he displayed an aptitude for writing. He was valedictorian of his graduating class but was unable to accept the award due to his ethnicity. Growing up during WWII, Roy experienced much discrimination, but never let it harden him.
On January 18, 1953, Roy married Setsuko Koyano. He affectionately nicknamed her "Sets." Together, they had four sons, whom Roy took much pride in. After leaving the farm and moving to Oklahoma with his young family, he worked as a plumber. He was a member of The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of The Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry. Most importantly to Roy, he was a member of Linwood Methodist Church in OKC for over 50 years.
In his free time, Roy was an avid hobbyist. He loved writing fictional stories and daily logs, reading, playing along to Jeopardy, gardening, cooking, photography, O.U. football, playing cards, and updating the Mikawa Family Newsletter; this was something he prided himself on since the start of it in 1970. Roy and Sue tutored children through the Whizkids program and volunteered at the local Meals on Wheels program for over a decade. Giving back was something Roy never had to be convinced to do, it was something that he thought necessary. He believed in helping those in need and loving them as Christ has loved us.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Kazuma and Ume Mikawa; brothers, James and Henry; and sisters, Rosalie and Mary. Roy is survived by his wife, Sets Mikawa; his four sons, Robert, Gary (Deborah), Russell (Sharon), and Kevin; his brothers, Tosh and Fred; his sisters, Alice, Helyn, and Louise; his grandchildren, Suzanne (Robert), Sarah, Erica (Josh), Daniel, Luke, Jenna Mae (Ryan), Jonas (Anna), and Anna (Chris); his great-grandchildren, AJ, Brittany, Malcolm, Wells, Maverick, Evander, Michael, Zander, James, Posey, Yasmina, Aumin, Jenna, Kamron, Taryn, and Lily.
We would like to acknowledge and thank all the organizations that helped take care of Roy in his later years: Hefner Mansions of OKC, Right-At-Home, FountainBrook of Midwest City, and Humanity Hospice. Your kindness and service to Roy will never be forgotten.
