Obituary

Surrounded by family, Roy Monroe Avants, 90, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026. Roy was born in Amber, OK, on November 7, 1935, to Virgel and Lola Avants. He lived in Ingleside, TX, until age ten when his family moved to Oklahoma City where he attended Putnam City Schools. It was there he met his high school sweetheart, Carol Sue Fowler. They married in 1953, eventually having three children, Wes, Karen, and Paula. They enjoyed camping, sailing and traveling with their kids in their early years.

Roy founded the Lake Thunderbird Sailing Club, serving as Commodore for several years. In the 1980s both Roy and Sue were active in Oklahoma City real estate, and Roy served a term as president of the Oklahoma City Board of Realtors. He loved golfing, traveling to England, trips to south Texas, researching genealogy and all things history. He also loved his family, living long enough to hold his great-great-grandchildren.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Sue, and his daughter, Paula Grindstaff. After Sue passed in 2010, Roy met Marilyn Chalk who became a dear, loving friend who brought joy to his life again.

He will be missed always by his surviving children, son, Wes Avants and daughter, Karen Lewis, and his many grandchildren and their families.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 2, 2:00 PM at Mercer-Adams Chapel in Bethany.

The family requests that memorials be made in Roy's name to the MS Foundation, the Alzheimer's Foundation, or charity of your choice.
