Obituary

Paul went home to be with his Lord on August 14 after a short battle with leukemia. He was born to Roscoe and Lela Maude Reynolds on May 2, 1919, in Homestead, Florida, but only spent a few weeks there before moving to Oklahoma and then Texas. His dads work with Conoco Oil took them to Waco, Petersburg, and Lubbock, Texas. Paul attended grade school and high school in Petersburg and was the first quarterback of the Petersburg High School Buffalos in 1937. He was awarded a double scholarship to Texas Tech University in Lubbock for football and basketball. He graduated with a business degree and went to play for a season with the Amarillo Goldsocks, a professional baseball team as their pitcher. While attending Tech, Paul met and married Evra Sturgeon and moved to San Diego, California for work in 1941. He found a job at Convair Aircraft as a timekeeper. Paul was offered a job in a bank at the close of the war but took a position at Lemon Grove School District, a San Diego suburb, as Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. He worked there for 30 years and retired in his late 50s. Paul was a past president of Lemon Grove Kiwanis where he was active for many years. In addition he served on the San Diego County Planning Commission. Paul and Erva had two daughters, Beverly and Barbara and did all they could to support and love their girls. They moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, to be grandparents to Bev and Larrys two girls, Heather Dawn and Holly Marie. Erva passed away in March 1991, and Paul moved home to San Diego. Paul was always a religious man but accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at a Billy Graham Crusade in San Diego in 1964. That decision changed his life forever. He enjoyed many years at San Diego First United Methodist Church where he served as building chairman, Skyline Wesleyan Church in San Diego where he served as treasurer and board member, and later Mayfair Baptist Church and Bethany First Church of the Nazarene in Oklahoma City. Paul always loved to laugh. In his later years he was known to carry printed jokes in his pocket that he enjoyed sharing. He remained active into his 80s with his passion for tennis. Sports was a great joy, especially following the San Diego Padres, Texas Tech, and lately the OKC Thunder. In 2001, Paul moved to Oklahoma City to be close to daughter Barbi and son-in-law Harlan. He met Opal Marie Smith and married her on November 30, 2002. Opal has been a great blessing in Pauls life. Paul is preceded in death by his parents Roscoe and Lela Reynolds, his sister Ruth Reynolds, and his wife Erva Reynolds. He is survived by his wife Opal Marie Smith Reynolds; daughter Beverly and son-in-law Larry Hargrave of Colorado Springs; daughter Barbi and son-in-law Rev. Harlan Moore of Oklahoma City; granddaughters Heather (Hargrave)Roberts of Tulsa, and Holly (Hargrave) and Blake Jarolim of Oklahoma City; great-grandchildren, Lavender and Moss Roberts of Tulsa. Paul is also blessed with many other extended family and friends whom he greatly loved. Paul had a lifetime verse, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path. Proverbs 3: 5-6 The family is grateful for all the care given to Dad through Dr. Paul Rothwell, Dr. Saadia Chohan, Integris Baptist Hospital and Oklahoma County Hospice.
