Roberta (Nielsen) Petty, 81, a longtime Bethany, OK resident, passed away November 1, 2021 in Oklahoma City. She was born November 9, 1939 in Washington, D.C. to Robert and Ethel (Harrison) Nielsen. She was preceded in death her parents and two of her sisters, Mary and Bertie.
Roberta officially met Jack Petty on the campus of Bethany Nazarene College on February 13, 1959. They were married in October of 1959 after eloping to Texas and exchanging vows in front of a Clay County, Texas judge in Henrietta, Texas. They were both 19 years of age and grew up together after their marriage. Both were enrolled at Bethany Nazarene College and graduated from there. After dropping out of college, Roberta spent the next several years rearing Jill and Todd and financing Jack through law school. Roberta was always a good student and in her mid-thirties she re-enrolled in education and obtained both her bachelors and masters degrees in sociology.
After the death of Jill, Roberta took full responsibility for rearing grandson, Kris. He was and is a delight and she would tell you she enjoyed every moment raising "that boy."
Roberta, along with Ann Strong, organized the 39ers ~ a group of close friends all born in 1939, and all members of BFC. Her home on Eagle Lane was the meeting place for both her extended family and Jacks family.
Her last days were full of pain and limited activity. She was cared for by Mercy Home Health, but the heavy lifting was carried out by Kristian and Jack. She is now out of her pain and with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her memory lives on with her family and friends, especially Jack, Todd, Kris, and Maddie.
Survivors include her husband and lifelong best friend, Jack. Their marriage endured over 62 wonderful years. Other survivors include their son, Todd; grandson, Kristian, granddaughter, Maddy; her brothers, Robert and Dan; and her sister, Nikki. Hopefully, we will all join her in our time and enjoy eternity together with the family of God.
Celebration of life will be at 2:00 p.m. on the 20th day of November, 2021 at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Eswatini Partnership in care of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, 6789 NW 39th Expressway, Bethany, OK 73008.
