Robert Louis Terrell Jr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 16, 1947. His parents were Robert Louis Terrell and Theresa Mary Barattieri. The family moved to Syracuse, New York where Robert enrolled at Christian Brothers Academy until an abrupt move to Oklahoma City, where he enrolled and graduated from Bishop McGuinness High School, where he met Kathy Peoples. He enrolled at OU in 1965 and she followed the next year. They both graduated from OU in 1969 with degrees in accounting. After graduation, he received a Masters Degree in accounting from OU. He found that he truly had a distinction to teach students. He went on to receive several degrees, including a Doctorate of Higher Education from Oklahoma State University in 1992.
Dr. Terrell served 35 years at the University of Central Oklahoma. Students flocked to his classes and "Dr. Bobs" classes were always full. "Dr. Bob" was known for his humor and always had a new joke for his classes. Part of his philosophy was "learning was fun." His students found excellent jobs when they graduated. He also found that many of his students had emulated his style in their professional lives. In 2008, Dr. Robert Terrell received the Oklahoma Professor of the Year Honor for the University of Central Oklahoma for Extraordinary Dedication to Undergraduate Teaching from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and the Council of Advancement and Support of Education Honor, in Washington DC.
The UCO professors were a group of people who enjoyed each other and had a comradery mission as they were helpful toward students and faculty. A new person moved into the small office next to him. She attempted to find out who the old curmudgeon next door was who was 34 years older than she. Sure enough, they became great friends, including both of the Terrell doctors. The only person who irritated him was he had to put up with his Department Chair wife.
Dr. Bob also had many mountains to climb. He was plagued with Asthma at the age of three. He loved sports of all kinds. He loved to play golf, and go fishing, but as he neared 40, his legs were beginning to fail, and his asthma slowly got worse. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at age 40. He was happy to reach retirement and spend time traveling with his family.
Dr. Robert Terrell leaves behind his wife, Dr. Katherene Peoples Terrell; two sons, Robert Louis Terrell, III, wife Jill Erin, granddaughter Piper Katherene Terrell, and son, Jonathon Andrew Terrell, wife Heidi, grandsons Hudson and Lincoln; and sister, Janet Welch.
"There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone the light remains." Unknown
