Duane, as he has always been known by his family and friends, was born August 3, 1955 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Robert "Bob" and Ruby (Arthur) Mersman. Growing up in Oklahoma City he attended school at Coronado Heights Elementary, Hefner Jr. High and Putnam City "Original" High School. He married Vicki Mitchell and together they had a son, Mitchell Mersman. Later he married Rhea (Gilreath) Cunningham. Duane worked in the field of electronics and as an IT network technician, accumulating 30 years at United Systems, in addition to several years at ARINC Airport Systems, amongst others. He met Karen (Hogue) McClaran in Tulsa and after several years of dating, they married in Hawaii and made their home in the Oklahoma City metro area. Duane peacefully passed into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ on August 1, 2021 at the age of 65 after fighting a devastating neurological disease.
Duane will be remembered most for his ornery sense of humor, his love of motorcycles since he was a young boy, and that he could fix most anything. He loved being with his grandchildren. Duane always had dogs and fostered many including Bella SPCA rescues, where he adopted Carl, whom he cherished more than life itself. He was a kind and gentle man, sweet and loving, who had a zest for adventure. Duane's faith and love for God was apparent in his life.
Duane was a member of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Mersman; mother, Ruby (Arthur) Mersman; aunt, Ruth (Arthur) Goodwin; uncles, Norman Fabra, Jimmie Crowell and Carl Avery; and cousins, Cindy Fabra, Jerry Lee Goodwin Sr, and Lance Goodwin.
Duane is survived by his loyal companion, Carl the dog; Karen Hogue; son, Mitchell and wife Lindsie of Houston, TX; stepsons, Rod, Adam, and Nick of the Tulsa area; paternal aunts, Mary Lou Fabra and Carol Ann Crowell of Oklahoma City; maternal aunt, Lou Avery of Tulsa and uncle, Chet Arthur and his wife Mary of Enid; grandchildren, Colton and Connor Gibson of Houston, TX, Ethan and Grace McClaran of Bristow, OK, Korben Avey, Tori and Tyler Austin, Tara, Gavin and Collin McClaran of Mannford, OK; cousins, Renee Avery of Tulsa, Jeff Avery of Skiatook, Jerry Lee Goodwin, Jr., and Lawrence Goodwin of Oklahoma City; and several dear friends including lifelong friend, Jim Cook and wife Pam of Mustang.
Family and friends may gather Friday 6-8pm at the family home in Mustang. Services will be held Saturday August 7, 2021, 2:00 p.m., at Bethany First Church of the Nazarenes Chapel in the Round (north entrance). Duane will be laid to rest at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City. Burial services are being handled by Mercer-Adams Funeral Service, Bethany.
