Robert Craig
Hutchison
Aug 9, 1951 — Sep 19, 2025
Somewhere in the background reel of Robert Hutchison's life, Classic Rock is playing, the Vietnam War is raging, the NY music festival, Woodstock, is advocating for Peace, Love, and Rock & Roll, computers are starting to emerge, and Robert is throwing a frisbee disc into a wire basket somewhere. He is starting his college education and forming friendships that will last the rest of his life. It is a critical and formative time.
Robert Craig Hutchison, much-loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, passed peacefully from this life on September 19, 2025 in Oklahoma City after more than a year of battling Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the blood.
Robert was born on August 9, 1951 in Alva, Oklahoma to Phil and Lavonne Hutchison and older sister, Vicki. The family relocated to Oklahoma City where Robert spent his youth. His early days were challenging because, as a toddler, he contracted Polio and was quarantined away from his family. Robert recovered with only mild repercussions and, subsequently, the Salk Vaccine was invented, approved, implemented, and a world-wide epidemic was averted.
Robert graduated from Northwest Classen H.S. in 1969 and attended Central State University in the 70's. This was in the early days of computing, and most computing was done on an IBM Mainframe, using keypunch cards. Like many students, Robert took an occasional part-time job to help with expenses. One of his more unusual jobs was helping a blind programmer run the jobs for the OSU-OKC campus. They worked nights, and Robert acted as his eyes and hands. They would read their cards into the computer and review the results. If things went wrong, the programmer would identify the issues and Robert would modify the card decks and re-run the job.
This early exposure to computing led him into the oil and gas business, where he worked as an oil well logging data analyst in the early years of his working life. Over time, his skills evolved and he became a network engineer in the field of credit card processing. He worked for First Data for 20 years, both in Oklahoma and Nebraska, where he designed, implemented, maintained, and optimized the company's network infrastructure.
From his first marriage, Robert was blessed with the birth of his daughter, Jessica. He adored her and took great pride in her personal and professional growth and accomplishments.
In 1996, Robert met Linda, who was the love of his life and his soulmate. They married the following year on the beach in a beautiful place called Smith's Cove in Grand Cayman. Their love story lasted for almost 28 years until Robert's passing.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Phil and Lavonne Hutchison and his sister, Vicki. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda (OKC); daughter, Jessica and son-in-law Ryan McDonald (TX); granddaughter and husband, Lauren and Dusty Coughey (TX); grandsons, Joe and Andrew (TX); great-grandchildren, Caleb and Maddie (TX); and by his best friend, Jack Gordon.
As a young man, Robert was known to be quite the prankster. His friend, Sue Matthews, recalled, "I met Hutch in 1971. We quickly formed a wonderful tribe of about 20 long-haired hippies who absolutely loved each other. Hutch had a way of pushing buttons. His name became a tribal verb as we would say to each other, "are you Hutching me?" He will be missed by so many."
Robert loved to play disc golf, and his friend, Jeff Homburg, said, "I'll never forget the day I met Hutch in the early 70's at McKinley Park. He taught me to throw an upside-down thumber with a Master Frisbee and that sparked a life-long interest (more like obsession) with Guts, a sometimes brutal but always fun and exciting game of burnout with a Frisbee. We played regularly for years and I loved every minute of it. After not seeing Hutch for decades, it was great to reconnect with him at a couple of reunions at McKinley Park over the last few years."
Robert was an avid OU Sooners fan, and he attended all the OU football home games for many years. He was really excited about this year's team.
Robert's two little dogs, Dash and Blanche, are missing their daddy terribly.
