Rev. Robert Eugene (Gene) Hulsey gained his eternal reward in heaven on Monday, June 8, 2020, in Bethany, OK. Gene exemplified his lifes motto: "Only one life, twill soon be past, Only whats done for Christ will last." Pastor, chaplain, counselor, and patriarch, his love for Christ was evident to all he metand he was sure to call each person "friend."
Gene was born to Emmett and Anna Hulsey on February 5, 1925, in Evansville, IN. After receiving a call to ministry at the age of 5, he preached his first sermon at age 12, and eventually graduated from Gods Bible College in 1942. On August 13, 1944, after a month-long courtship, he married Dorothy Rowan in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Gene pastored in eleven different churches across the United States before settling in Oklahoma City in 1986. He then became the first Protestant chaplain at Mercy Hospital and served in that capacity for 16 years. A talented singer and pianist, Gene traveled with a singing quartet in his youth, and continued to worship publicly and privately his whole life. He was also known for his quick wit, sly smile, and ready laugh. But, most of all, his Godly wisdom, deep, steadfast prayer life, and example of Christlikeness are his legacy that will endure.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, his parents, as well as his sister, Thelma (Hulsey) Shortreed, and grandson-in-law, Eric King. He is survived by his children, Steve Hulsey (Jan) and Sharon Smith (Doyle); six beloved grandchildren: Janna Rothwell (Tim), Rachel Smith, Jill King, Jeffrey Smith (Theresa), Aaron Smith (Sara), and Jessica McDaniel (Mike); and 12 great-grandchildren: Morgan Hardin (Ben) & Evan Rothwell, Peyton, Kaylen, & Emerson King, Kaedan, Benjamin, & Ian Smith, Austin & Riley Smith, and Caleb & Audra McDaniel.
