Obituary

Robert Helsel (Bob), faithful husband and father passed away February 12, 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Joes, Colorado on September 3, 1935 to Charles Kenneth and Cordilia Emmelyne Helsel, bob grew up in a pastor's home. Living in a variety of states allowed him many opportunities to develop a love and appreciation for this beautiful country and it's people. Bob married his high school sweetheart, Janice Faye Langley on June 12, 1955 in Loveland, Colorado. After marriage, they moved to Pasadena, California where, over the next 13 years, three children were born to this union: Catherine Lynn, Mark Eugene and Marshall Scott. Bob's early years were spent in law enforcement serving on the Pasadena Police Department and the California Highway Patrol. In 1967, Bob moved with his family to Oklahoma City where he worked for the Oklahoma Police Department, Xerox Corporation, Superior Office Supplies and Triangle Realty. After finishing graduate school, Bob spent the next 24 years in education teaching Norman High School, Putnam City West and was principal of Mayfield Junior High. He retired in 1994, after establishing the 1st Alternative Education Program in Putnam City school system. After retirement, Bob, along with his wife, spent the next 5 years supervising the pages that served in the House of Representatives at the Oklahoma capital. He also spent 3 memorable years teaching a group of 12 high school boys the love of God and Scripture and in a Sunday school class at 1st United Methodist. Bob was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife, Jan of the home and three children, Catherine Lynn Houts (Stan Houts) of OKC, Mark Eugene Helsel (Paula) of Leavenworth, Washington, Marshall Scott Helsel (Melissa) of Mustang, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Christa Rene Sanders, Jonathan Scott Helsel, Kyle Eugene Houts, Katrina Elyse Whitehead of Oklahoma and Heather Rae Mercado of Centreville, Maryland. (Patricia Faye Saienni and Victoria Renee of Maryland). Also an adopted granddaughter, Heather Bricker of Norman, Oklahoma; eight great grandchildren; sister, Laurel Hubbard (Robert M.) of Mattoon, Illinois; and brother, Charles Helsel (Darlene) of Berthoud, Colorado. Bob's family wants to publically thank the medical team of doctor's, nurses, home-health and hospice at Mercy Health Center and Visiting Angels for their loving care and concern during the past months.
