Always ready with a funny comment to tease someone, Bobby Robert Joseph Cole was never one never one to sit still or quietly. He was energetic and enjoyed being generous to people about whom he cared. Bobby passed away Monday, September 30, 2019 after a long illness precipitated by traumatic brain injury he sustained during military service.
He was born February 28, 1961 a middle child of six to Beverly (Pederzani) and Marshall Cole in Canastota, New York. He was a member of the class of 1980 of Canastota Junior-Senior High, and an avid Syracuse University fan.
He joined the US Army in 1980, was stationed overseas twice and served in the military police. Following an honorable discharge, he sold automobiles and was a commercial truck driver.
Bobby loved his job helping young people at the Gary E. Miller Childrens Justice Center in El Reno. He was assistant director of detention; then, helped families in crisis access local and state services. He also worked for the Department of Defense at Tinker AFB.
After moving to Oklahoma, he began course work at Southern Nazarene University. In 2013, he earned a bachelor of science in family studies and gerontology. He also earned a master of science in management in 2015. Bobby was inducted into Delta Mu Delta, a business honor society.
After early retirement for health reasons, he learned woodworking in recreational therapy at the VA. He set up a workshop in his garage to handcraft beautiful red cedar walking sticks. He enjoyed personalizing sticks for family members, senior adults and veterans. He was also an avid bowler in several leagues.
Bobby was generous to strangers, as well as those he knew. He gave even when it was a personal sacrifice. He would read on Twitter about a poor, single mother and would help her. He fixed others cars, bought tires and lots of groceries, paid rent or veterinary bills. He also bought Cub Scout uniforms, shoes, and clothes for children.
