ROBERT MASON (BOB) BARR
August 7, 1927-August 31, 2021
Born in Mason City, Iowa on August 7, 1927, Bob was the fourth of six children born to Mason and Mable Barr. He had three brothers: Dick, Ray, and Chuck, and two sisters: Evelyn and Mary Jane, all of whom preceded him in death
Bob's mother died when he was 13 years old. His father subsequently re-married, and his stepmother did not want Bob in her life. Bob decided to move to Los Angeles to live with his eldest brother Dick and his family where he continued high school and began working on the docks.
At 17, Bob decided to join the Merchant Marine and became a cook, sailing on Liberty ships for four years.
After the Merchant Marine, Bob joined the Army, which became a 20-year career that saw him serve in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He also served in Japan and Germany, as well as various locations in the United States. He was particularly proud of his service with the 187th Airborne Rakkasans.
Early in is his Army career, Bob was assigned to recruiting duty back in his hometown Mason City. This is when he reunited with the love of his life, Madelon. Bob and Madelon married January 5, 1952. They had five children: Melinda, Melissa, Michele, Molly, and Melody. They also had three grandchildren: Ashley and Dane Romano and Logan Badry. Truthfully, Bob's family meant everything to him. He loved every one of them unconditionally. His great love of family extended to all his siblings, their families, and Madelon's siblings and families. His love was not restricted to just family though. Bob was truly one of those guys that would do anything for anybody, an instance of which is the many years he spent helping to feed the homeless with Catholic charities.
After leaving the service, Bob and his family moved to Oklahoma City. He became the manager of Alfie's Fish and Chips where he worked for four years. Bob again got the travel bug and became a truck driver for the Jack Cooper transport company, delivering cars all of the United States.
Sadly, Bob's eldest daughter, Melinda, passed away in 1981. In 1982, tragedy struck again when Madelon passed away. This caused Bob to take a 2-year sabbatical from work to ensure his youngest daughter completed her education.
Bob retired from Jack Cooper in 1990. Now with time on his hands he turned to another of his passions: motorcycles. He bought a decked-out Honda Goldwing and enjoyed numerous road trips to see family and friends in Iowa, Colorado, and California. He followed up his motorcycle passion by turning his attention to classic cars, purchasing a '51 Chevy Belaire (the car he courted Madelon in) and a candy apple red '67 Ford Mustang. He attended numerous car shows for many years. Bob was also passionate about Sooner football and attended games, both home and away, for a long time.
In summary, Bob was a loving, caring, and extremely patriotic man who is already missed terribly by a great many people. There is now a very bright light shining in Heaven as he is surrounded by all his family that preceded him in death and is now at God's side.
