Obituary

Robert Trowbridge Axworthy (03/12/1924 12/20/2017) was born in Berkeley California to Cecil Trowbridge Axworthy and Anna, or "Nan" Axworthy. Cecil, or "Ses" to his close friends, was a Baptist minister, and they had 3 sons, the oldest Don, then Bob, and the youngest, Gordon, or "Gord." They grew up in Vallejo, CA during the Great Depression. Bob attended Sacramento Jr. College prior to WW2 and after the war concluded, he earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Washington State University. He was drafted into the army in 1944 and sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge on Jan 1, 1945, not knowing his ultimate destination, which turned out to be Leyte Gulf and Manilla in the Philippine Islands. Due to his high standard military test scores and excellent typing skills (11 wpm), he was assigned to work as a clerk typist in General MacArthur's "GHQ" Headquarters. Bob volunteered for the mainland invasion of Japan, although he was quick to point out, "no one actually asked us." The atomic bomb ended the war in the Pacific theatre and Bob emerged from the 2nd Great War of the century uninjured, with citations for the "Philippine Liberation Award" and "World War 2 Victory" medals. He subsequently went with MacArthur's occupation force into Tokyo, Japan in 1946. After returning home from the war, Bob was married in 1950 to Shirley Anne Kooken. They had 3 children, Alan, Todd and David. Bob traveled extensively for jobs in sales for water pumps and later in the propane and natural gas pump and compressor business, and was chairman of the LPG National Safety Council. He invented propane emergency shut-off valves and other equipment still in use today. He traveled extensively for work as well as with Shirley, who was a travel agent, and they went on many trips to exotic locations all over the world. Since Shirley's passing in 2012, Bob has lived in his own home in OKC with his son, David. Bob was healthy and active for several years after Shirley passed. He went on a cruise to Hawaii with Todd and David and he also attended his grandchildren's graduation in Williamsburg, VA. In keeping with Army tradition, Bob gave his grandson, Iain, his First Salute as a commissioned officer, one of the great honors of his lifetime. Another special event was an "Oklahoma Honor Flight" to Washington, DC with his son, David, to visit the war memorials in 2014. In 2016, Bob began to suffer from the effects of congestive heart failure which caused a steady decline in his health and lifestyle until his passing, as continuing life became "a bridge too far." Bob is survived by his 3 sons, Alan and his wife Mary (Essex Jct., VT), Todd (Houston, TX) and David (OKC); and 2 grandchildren, Miranda and Iain. Bob was blessed with health, long life, prosperity and great joy during his lifetime. All of us who remain will remember his quick wit and humor and the spark of curiosity which he passed on to all of us. In recognition of his military service, Bob and Shirley will be interred, together and forever, at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, OK.
