Obituary

Richard Thomas Fenwick, Major/USAF (retired), was born August 3, 1931 and died November 7, 2011. He was born in Morganfield, KY and moved to Henderson, KY soon after. He attended Holy Name School until he dropped out to join the US Army Air Corp in 1947 at the age of 16. He served in the USAF until 1968 when, at the age of 36, he was one of the youngest majors ever to retire with 20 years of service. He also had the least amount of formal schooling. He saw duty on both sides of the rank ladder. He was an enlisted man until he received an officer's commission in 1953. He was a B-17 skanner, crew chief, flight engineer, pilot and air craft commander. He flew 37 short range bombing missions in the B-29 during the Korean conflict. He flew 344 C-123 resupply missions with the 19th Air Commando Squadron in Vietnam. He earned the air medal with 12 oak leaf clusters. His aircraft flying experience includes the B-17, P-51, F-80, B-29, KC-97, B-47, B-36, T-33, C-47, C-123 and his greatest love, the B-58 Hustler. In 1959 he became to youngest pilot to be upgraded to B-47 aircraft commander. He received the highest grades ever given in the pilot upgrade program at Forbes AFB, Kansas. In 1962 he became the youngest pilot in experience ever selected for the B-58 Hustler program and graduated at the top of his class. After his retirement from the Air Force, he flew the Lockheed Electra, DC-8, DC-9 and DC-10 for several commercial airlines until he was no longer allowed to fly because of his age. He took great pride in being in a family that has had a member serving in the USAF since the USAF was formed. After living in many different places throughout the US, he returned to Oklahoma City where all 5 of his children reside. He is survived by his daughter Helen Lewis and husband Mike, son Paul Fenwick and life-partner John Cline, his daughter Ann Borah and husband Bob, daughter Sara Martz and husband Ed, his son John Fenwick, sister Marie Bohn, brother Jim Fenwick, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family will be greeting friends at Mercer Adams on Wednesday, Nov 9th from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be at Mercer Adams on Thursday, Nov 10th at 4pm.
