"To whom much is given, much will be required" - Luke 12:48 If you have heard that line of wisdom, you know it means that we are held responsible for what we have. If we have been blessed with talents, wealth, knowledge, time and the like, it is expected that we benefit others. For Dick Cain, the blessings were many and the giving back was a life lesson learned over the course of his 92 years on this earth. Richard "Dick" Cain went to Glory on June 7, 2023. Over the last few days of his life, he was attended by children and grandchildren, who kept the conversation flowing in the room, enjoying each other's company in fellowship. It is hoped that Dick was aware of our presence and that it helped give him comfort. It was by no means somber! At one point, boisterous and opinionated enough that the nurse asked us to close the door! Dick always enjoyed a good gathering! Dick was born on a Sunday, January 4, year of Our Lord 1931 to William Morgan Cain and Geraldine "Ione" Cain (nee Pledger). Within a few minutes of Dick's birth, twin sister, Rowena, also arrived. They were welcomed into an already established family, as William had two children, Bill Jr and June, from his late, first wife. Over the next decade, brothers Jon and Robert "Bobby" rounded out the brood to six. Dick is survived by brother Bobby, the others having preceded him in death. Dick attended Linwood and Wilson Elementary schools, Taft Middle School and Culver Military Academy. At the University of Oklahoma, where he obtained a bachelors degree in business administration, Dick was a member of ROTC and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. From OU and Phi Gam came a number of lifelong friendships and even an in-law or two! It was while at OU, that Dick met the lovely Julia Beckman. After college, Dick fulfilled his ROTC military obligation by serving in the United States Air Force as 1st Lieutenant during the Korean conflict. He told of being an intelligence officer, tasked with testing the air station's security by directing his team in placing "tags" in restricted areas to indicate that it had been breached. While serving his country, future wife, Julia, was flying as a stewardess for American Airlines. Julia introduced Dick's Phi Gam roommate, Jim Clowe, to a stewardess friend, Jane. It was at Jim and Jane's wedding that Dick decided to propose to Julia. They were married January 28, 1956 in Julia's hometown of Muskogee. Over the next five years, the Cain family added children Mary Ellen Cain, Catherine Ann Cain, Richard O. Cain, Jr and William Curtis Cain. Daughter, Catherine, passed away in 2012. In addition to the roles of husband and father, Dick's life included working for the family business, Cain's Coffee Company (founded by his father), stockbroker and insurance executive. He and brother Jon partnered in a venture, Trend Leasing, until deciding to go their separate ways in business. Dick used his share of proceeds from Cains Coffee's sale in 1964 to invest in real estate and oil and gas. In semi-retirement, Dick was resident owner of Aberdeen Properties, for a time one of the few quality residential apartment complexes near the downtown and state capitol areas. Dick and Julia were blessed with 54 years of marriage until her passing in 2010. As parents, they delighted in their children's and grandchildren's talents and accomplishments, especially those involving sports. With time, Dick and Julia became grandparents to MacKenzie, William and Sarah McAnally, Taryn Cain Long, Samuel Morgan Cain and William Henry Cain. They are the great-grandparents of Demi Long and Eleanor McAnally. Dick is also survived by daughter-in-law, Tracy Cain (wife of son Curtis), Tatum Cain (wife of grandson Sam) and Mike Maxey (husband of daughter Mary). In the last few years, Dick also adopted Tinsley Keefe and Sam Roberts. Dick and Julia were godparents to Ellen Clowe Wood. Dick also referred to his caregivers as family, especially Miss Rose, Miss Bhing and Miss Fe. In 2012, Dick was blessed with a second love and married Dawn Davis. Dawn brought joy back into Dick's life. They loved to spend time down at his Tishomingo cattle ranch, fishing and especially getting gussied up to go dancing. It was during their marriage that Dick, raised in the Methodist Church, reaffirmed his belief in the redeeming work of Jesus Christ on the cross. As an expression of this faith, Dick was baptized in 2012. Dick and Dawn were married until her untimely death in 2015. Blessed with athleticism and a love for the outdoors, Dick especially enjoyed golf and hunting. Opening day (Thanksgiving in Oklahoma) would find the males of the household taking a quick noon meal, then tromping off to the fields with an English Pointer or two. With any luck, Christmas dinner's menu would include quail or pheasant. With time and the aging process, Dick developed macular degeneration which curtailed many activities requiring visual acuity. But that didn't slow him down. He was always the first one on the block to have the newest technical device. This ability and desire to embrace technology - remarkable for an "older" person - gave him a leg up when he began to lose his sight. As a volunteer and board member of NewView (formerly Oklahoma League for the Blind), Dick shared this knowledge to help others utilize various devices to continue to function after loss of sight. Dick was fortunate to have a sense of renewed purpose, even through a disabling condition. The legacy Dick leaves us is a family bonded and committed to one another, tenacious in spirit. We are resilient overcomers. We, like Dick, and occasionally because of Dick, have learned to value family and, above all, our faith. Dick would wish that generous gifts be made to NewView in his memory. https://nvoklahoma.org/donate/ . Memorial Service St. Luke's United Methodist Church Friday, June 16, 2023 11:00 AM 222 N.
