Lowell Ray Halbert was born to Albert and Mabel Halbert on October 18, 1931, in Corsicana, Texas. He passed from this life on September 15, 2017, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 28 days.
Ray graduated from high school in Terral, Oklahoma. He worked in Wichita Falls before serving in the Marines during the Korean war. Following discharge, he lived and worked in Los Angeles, California for about 10 years. One job was in the Bank of America, Hollywood branch where he had many interesting stories about the people he met.
When Ray left California, he moved to Lawton, Oklahoma to be near family. There he met and married Wanda in 1966. Together they served in the music ministry at Pollard Avenue and Cache Road Baptist churches and taught Sunday School there and at First Baptist West. In 1980, Ray became Postmaster at the Rush Springs, OK post office. He served as deacon at the Southern Baptist Church in Rush Springs and served on the school board until he moved to Amarillo, Texas. There, he and Wanda served at Bykota Baptist Church until Rays eyesight forced his retirement from the music ministry. He continued to serve as a deacon and faithful church member, expressing his love of the Lord. Ray and Wanda moved to Oklahoma City in May 2017 to be closer to family.
Ray loved music, the ocean and sitting outside. He loved his family dearly and talked often about them, enjoying spending time with them. He was especially proud of his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father and papa, and will be greatly missed.
