Coach Randy (Clayton R) Helms Jr died on November 30, 2020 at age 72. He was born in Topeka, KS to Clayton Helms Sr and Doris Taylor Helms. Randy and his family moved to Oklahoma early in his childhood where he attended Oklahoma City Schools and graduated from Northwest Classen High School. Randy served in the United States Marines. He attended Central State University where he obtained his degree in Safety Education. He married the love of his life, Charlette Rae Adams, on August 29, 1970. They had two children, Courtney and Adam. Randy was an educator and coach in Putnam City Schools. Randy was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, and coach. Randy will be remembered most for his everyday outfits consisting of shorts and bright eye catching polos, his dedication to Oklahoma Cross Country and Track, and his ability to talk to anyone about how proud he was of his kids and grandkids. Coach Helms leaves behind a legacy within Oklahoma Track and Field. He was recently named to the Putnam City Athletic Hall of Fame and is also a member of the Oklahoma Track Coaches Hall of Fame. Randy was a rare combination of someone who had a love of life and a firm understanding of what was important living a life with those he loved and making all around him feel valued. Randy is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlette; his daughter, Courtney and her finace Jeremy Walker; his son, Adam and grandchildren Reagan, Craig, Mackenzie, Hunter, Courtland, and Colten; and numerous extended family members. Randy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard. Services will take place at Church of the Servant at 11am on Friday, December 4, 2020. Services may be viewed on live stream at servantokc.org/watch. Viewing will take place at Mercer-Adams Funeral Home in Bethany on Thursday, December 3, 2020 from 6-8pm. The family suggests donations to the ALS Foundation or the Putnam City Schools Foundation. .
