Obituary

Our beloved Husband, Dad, Granddad and Friend was called home to meet Jesus Christ his Savior on June 4, 2023 after a short but steadfast battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Phil made an eternal impact on this world in his 79 years and never once sought attention for himself, but only ever wanted His Lord to be glorified. Phillip Joseph Susil was born in Edna, Texas on October 23, 1943 to Anton Joseph Susil and Dorothy Appolonia Muschalek. Phil and his siblings Barbara Patterson (Tom), John Susil (Agnes), Vicky Powell (Ray) and Mike Susil (Sandy) had a loving childhood, filled with memories of exploring the South Texas hills. Phil graduated from Edna High School in 1962 then spent two years at Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, Texas. From there he moved to Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont, Texas where he earned an Engineering degree in 1966. Upon graduation he moved to Oklahoma City to accept a job. It was here that he spent the next four decades working as a Mechanical Engineer for Western Electric, City Service Gas Company, Lucent Technologies and AT&T. Upon retirement he and Vivian spent over 11 years with a popular booth at the Rink Gallery in Bethany, where his endless talents were constantly observed by all who visited. Not long after moving to Oklahoma City, the Lord ordained through a mutual friend that Phil would meet Vivian Lois Robbins on June 26, 1968. Soon after they met, they shared their first date at Falls Creek, fell in love and became inseparable. They were married on October 4, 1969 and spent 53 1/2 beautiful years together in the same home in Bethany, Oklahoma. Truly God provided a helpmate for each of them in one another. Vivian is the unsung hero as she diligently cared for dad in every single one of his needs and never left his side during his illness. Phil was so proud of her always, but especially these last few months as she not only joyfully served him, but took care of everything around the house and all of the daily tasks that were usually his responsibility. God gave them three daughters from their union. Jennifer Griffin (Ray), Corbin Skelton (Stuart) and Sarah Byers (Micah). Precious grandchildren Caleb and Emily Griffin, and Judah, Abilene and Luke Skelton were added over the years and were such a delight to their granddad. He was always happy to see them, attend their programs and activities, teach them his limitless skills, impart wisdom, tell a joke, solve a riddle, shoot a BB gun or his miniature cannon, or just have a conversation about whatever his grandkids were currently interested in. Phil is survived by these family members plus innumerable friends, neighbors and Christian brothers and sisters who have been like family over the years. Phils passion was not only engineering but woodworking, crafting, creating, designing, architecture, building, inventing and many other talents that made every inch of their home beautiful. Especially at Christmastime when he would spend hours unpacking, arranging, connecting and displaying the hundreds of pieces of the Dept. 56 Snow Village that Vivian has collected over the years. So much work! But he looked forward to it, gladly, because he knew it brought Mom so much joy. Countless people over the years were blessed with his abilities as he would graciously help out whomever he could, as often as he could. Most summer vacations since 1984 were spent in Red River, New Mexico walking the river, playing shuffleboard, hiking, whittling on the porch, watching the square dancers each night and attending Sunday morning services at the Community Center, competing against his girls in untold rounds of air hockey and mini golf at the Playhouse, eating at Shotgun Willies and the Sundance and just having family time in the mountains. Red River was truly his home away from home. None of these passions, however, compared to the way that Phil fervently studied the Scriptures and diligently taught week after week the Word of the Lord. His numerous Biblical commentaries, theology books, the teaching and cassette tape/CD ministry of John MacArthur, thousands of hours of diligent study, and his beloved Bible all serving as his food day after day to sustain him and draw him closer to his Lord whom he loved so deeply and was faithful to tell others about, even from his hospital bed as he was fighting this cruel disease. A conversation about the Lord was never far from Phils lips. Phil and Vivian have been members at Putnam City Baptist Church for more than five decades, with Phil faithfully and consistently serving in many roles; the Chairman of Deacons, Vice Chairman, on the Deacon committee, as a 5th grade Sunday School teacher, usher, carpenter, adult Bible class teacher, VBS worker, bus driver, baptistry assistant, Roman Town builder and SO many more behind the scenes, overlooked tasks that he never needed nor took credit for. One specifically being the unofficial resident doctrinal expert that so many sought Biblical counsel from time and time again. Truly a humble, servant heart from the time the Lord saved him in 1978 until the day that he met Jesus face-to-face and heard, "Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord." The family would like to express their unending gratitude to dear friends, neighbors and church members for these past 4 months of faithful prayers, visits, meals, calls, texts, handwritten notes, snacks, treats, yardwork, medical equipment loans, encouragement and help as we were consumed by caring for dad. What a comfort, privilege and blessing it was to have you on this journey with us. Dad felt very loved and for that we are eternally grateful. The family will be available to receive friends at Mercer Adams funeral home on Sunday, June 11 from 4 to 6 PM. Funeral services will be held in the chapel at Quail Springs Baptist Church on Monday, June 12 at 1 PM with burial to follow at Bethany Cemetery. For those unable to attend, funeral services will be live streamed and recorded at qsbc.org/live For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, Blessed is the man who trusts in You!
