Obituary

Peggy Jean Harris, 92, passed away August 9, 2026, at her home in Warr Acres, OK. She was born November 1, 1933, in Rush Springs, OK to Elvin Merle and Oleta Faye (Sherwood) White. She grew up in Rush Springs, OK with her two sisters, Pat and Loetta. A brother, Brad White, was added to the family when Peggy was a senior in high school.

Peggy loved the game of basketball and played during her high school years. She was crowned Watermelon Queen in 1951. She was given a free trip to fly to Chicago with a chaperone, which was always a great memory for her.

Peggy moved away from home to attend nursing school at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She worked at Mercy Hospital for part of her career. She was employed by Aero Commander in Bethany, OK for some years. She returned to nursing as a school nurse at Harding Middle School and then moved to Putnam City Elementary School where she finished her career in May, 1995.

Peggy attended Tulakes Baptist Church since 1960 where she loved teaching Sunday School for many children through the years.

She married Bill Harris on July 2, 1955. They had four children, Roger Dean, Gay Lynn, Gary Don and Renee Suzanne. We could always count on a home cooked meal every evening, and of course, there was always dessert.

Peggy had many good, fun camping trips with her family. She spent many evenings watching football and Thunder basketball games with her family and most times with her dear friend, Wayman Cisco.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Billy Harris. She is survived by her children, Roger Harris and wife Ladonna, Gay Lynn Gilles and husband Michael, Gary Harris and wife Pamela, and Renee Hicks; grandchildren, Kael Gilles and wife Leigh Ann, Jordan Gilles and wife Mandalyn, Rebecca Schlemmer and husband David, Jeff Harris and wife Nina, Greg Harris, Ryan Harris and wife Jessica, Brandon Hicks and wife Starla, and Devin Hicks; and great-grandchildren, Zayden Gilles, Raeleigh Gilles, Everly Schlemmer, Olivia Harris, Colton Harris, Ikiah Harris, Audiya Harris, and Christian Hicks. She is also survived by her brother, Brad White and wife Betty.

Special consideration and thanks to those who helped care for Peggy in her last days: Starla Hicks, Kristy and Scott Fomin, Allison Fomin, and Devin Hicks for checking on his grandmother, Peggy, every morning and having coffee ready.
