Pauline Rosalee (Chaat) Smith, Oklahoma City, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, March 31, 2017. She was 88 years old. Through her quiet intelligence, determination, and flair for organizing almost anything, Paula was an asset to her family and the many endeavors she chose. Paula married Clodus R. Smith, her college sweetheart, on June 25, 1950. She attended Lawton High School, and graduated from Cameron College and Oklahoma State University. Paula was an enrolled citizen of the Comanche Nation; the familys Comanche name is Chahtinneyackque. She loved children and taught in New York and Maryland public schools. In 1974 the couple moved to Cleveland, Ohio. There, she became director of the American Indian student cultural enrichment program through the Office of Indian Education and was a respected advocate on many issues. Paula was a YWCA Woman of the Year, appointed to the Governors Ohio Womens Policy and Research Commission, Ohio president of the American Association of University Women, and on the boards of the National Indian Education Association, the United Way of Cleveland, and the Humane Society of America. Both Paula and Clodus have been ardent supporters of Cameron University, where they established the Clodus and Pauline (Chaat) Smith American Indian Scholarship, an endowed lectureship, and were recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998. She enjoyed the solace and friendships offered by the Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City where she was a longtime member of the choir.
A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Paula will be dearly missed by her husband of 67 years, Clodus R. Smith, Oklahoma City; daughter, Martha Lynn Chaatsmith and son-in-law, Robert L. Jones; grandson, Robert Parker C. Jones; son, Paul Chaat Smith and daughter-in-law, Lynora Williams; daughter, Paula Diane Smith and partner, Jake Strongbow; her constant companion, Catty, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Her parents, her sister Dorothy Tomah, her brothers Robert, Samuel, and Theodore Chaat preceded her in death.
